Pity Liu Xiang pulled out of this event because of injury. I was looking forward to see him and Robles battle it out. Saw the clip shown on the RTE highlights this evening and I thought Bill O'Herlihy and Eamonn Coghlan were kinda of insensitive calling it a "soap opera" and having a laugh at it. Surely, they understood the tremendous pressure what Liu was under, not being able to perform on his home turf, considering he was the first ever Chinese to win gold in athletics in the Olympics, which Jerry Kiernan seemed to understand and was trying to explain this to them. Fair enough, the coach bawling his eyes out was a bit much.

Robles looks amazing though! Still looking forward to it.

    He wasn't. First male.

Wang Junxia won the 5000m in 1996. She of 3000m and 10000m world record fame.

According to Coughlan and Kiernan she was a drug cheat. They called the 10,000m time at this Olympics the true world record.
On the 110m Liu Xiang is very good. He has the technique to win which is good IMO. He beats faster runners who can run the 100m in 10 flat by having better technique. I thought he would get silver after Robles.

According to the IAAF she wasn't. I have little respect for either. They have no respect for anyone and say whatever sh!te comes into their minds for the viewer numbers.

Ah, yes I remember, she was part of the Ma family army known for their long distance runners. Apologies on my part.

I just thought it was in bad taste that they were laughing at this and calling it a soap opera. If that was the case, stop talking about it and stop showing the clips(Liu kicking the wall repeatedly etc.). They could have just inform the viewers regarding this news and get on with it.

I think what they said was that they had serious doubts over here, they didnt go as far as to say she was a drug cheat.. at thats jsut not true.. or proven.

She just happened to have the same coach as Marita Koch the east german who still holds the 400m record. Get real, she came out of nowhere with a dodgy coach and disappeared just as quickly as she arrived.

Here is a list of ridiculous world track record holders. Florence Griffith-Joynemr 100m and 200m, Jackie Joyner-Kersee Heptathlon, Marita Koch 400m , Jarmila Kratochvilova 800m, Yunxia Qu 1500m, Junxia Wang 3000m and 10000m.

No she didn't have the same coach. You don't know what you are talking about. She set all those world records in 1993 and came back to win gold and silver in 1996.

Ma Junren was training the chinese track team from 1990. This is from an interview he did in 1994.

Today Ma admits that perhaps his athletes, who reportedly train up to the rate of a marathon per day, had broken down.
"The last two years were exhausting for the team, so 1994 and 1995 will be a time of adjusting and maintaining," he said. "We need a year or two. We may peak again in 1996."

Thanks for that. Wolfgang Meier coached (and married) Marita Koch. I think you'll find that Wolfgang Meier and Ma Junren are two totally different people!

Incidentally, Marie-Jose Perec, who considered herself the "real" world record holder in the 400m (i.e. Koch was a drug cheat), selected Wolfgang Meier as her coach at the end of her career.

If someone has tested positive or has admitted drug use then they are fair game to discuss as dopers.

Athletes who have never tested positive or admitted use are not.

Big cock-up in the women's 100m hurdles - Lolo Jones (USA) was the big pre-race favourite, was leading and hit the seond last hurdle and finished 5th

    1. Dawn Harper (USA)
    2. Sally McLennan (AUS)
    3. Pricilla Lopez-Schliep (CAN)

If you want to keep believing that those Chinese athletes were clean so be it.
But its well known to all what was going on out there at the time. And I cannot remember for sure which of the former east german coaches 'advised' the Chinese during this time.

Nice shakeout for Robles, all he has to do is stay on his feet in the final.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,598 ✭✭✭shels4ever

where have I heard that before..

Looking at these times, why wasn't Peter Coghlan born 10 years later!

Robles looks a different class, as long as he doesn't do a Lolo he should take it. . .

Robles just won the 110m with 12.93. A very clear win!!! Although, thought he was going to done it with a better time, but just nitpicking!! Great performance.

That was a real master class. The Americans never got to put him under pressure.

amazing, back in the day i did some session over the hurdles to get ready for a steeplechase and found it so so hard, the work it takes to get it so so right must be huge never mind the speed.

Did i see someone in another thread say that with Bolts stride length he could possibly 2 stride over hurdles!!! I know its only hypothetical but imagine it!!
