Any way to get NAT1 with imagine?

Hi, I was wondering is there any way to achieve NAT 1 with Gaelic Telecom/imagine? I have only noticed mine is NAT 2, and it makes adding people in call of Duty 4(PS3) impossible. My cousin got a PS3 there last week, he is with eircom, and I managed to get him to NAT1 no prob (with the help of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JugGe7CCuNU).
Is there any way of me getting NAT 1 at all, I have tried everything at this stage!
    Thanks in advance

NAT 2 will not prevent you playing people in games, including COD4. Check your router firewall log to see if the ports are blocked by it instead. Even if you forward your ports, it doesn't matter if the firewall still blocks access to them.

I have NAT 2, and firewall opened to the specific ports, and I have no problems playing people on any games (COD4, GTA, Grid, Guitar Hero, etc...)

I have also argued before that NAT 1 is *not* preferable to NAT 2 - all you are doing is making your PS3 an unprotected internet host. It will also break any integration between your PS3 and your home network (if you use media servers for example, they won't work with NAT 1, as your PS3 will be outside your network.)

for a start ur wrong bout nat 2, its still behind a firewall and every game needs the ports forwarded to work on nat 2, the firewall cant block them if they are opened cos ya just put a little hole in the firewall, ps3 isnt attcakable by virus yet so nat is better and media server does work with nat1 i have upc with nat 1 and tversity and wmp works with it

    Lets argue with the sysadmin...

Thats the idea - you forward the ports, and then people access them. Thats how you get NAT 2.

?? If you manually forward a port, it doesn't open the firewall - if you use uPnP, it will try request a port forward and open the firewall automagically. But peoples milage has varied with uPnP, because some routers seem to do this better than others.

If in doubt, check the firewall logs for "Access Denied" entries for your forwarded ports...

Real good reason to leave it wide open...

In your setup, maybe - in most it won't. If your PS3 suddenly leaves your network, most routers will by default block its access to your internal network resources, such as media servers...

Dave's €0.02 - take my advice if you want, otherwise don't - either way is fine by me...

ya can get nat2 without ports opened for games ya only need the ports for psn opened what do ya mean ya forward the ports and people access them, no one access's them

if ya forward the port it does open the firewall thats the whole point in it ya make a rule and the router remembers it, the netopia routers have rubbish upnp it says its unavailable on ps3 when its enabled from the router

if it was such a security flaw dont ya think sony wouldnt have the option of nat 1

thats the idea of forwardin ports and addin ip's to a safe list

I always get a good laugh when I see unknowledgeable people talking authoratively :)

I rest my case.... if people want to understand port-forwarding instead of following random instructions, i suggest some basic reading:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_forwarding (Not great)
    http://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/port_forwarding.html
    http://www.homenethelp.com/web/explain/port-forwarding-dmz.asp

(In the last link, you can think of NAT1 like putting your PS3 in a completly open DMZ (called the internet :-))

Which I wouldn't recommend if you want to do media streaming etc.

whats unknowledgeable that i said and media stremin works with nat 1 come to newbridge and i will show ya

Well done - you're like some kind of networking genius - have you informed the Nobel foundation? (I joke but seriously, read up on what port-forwarding is and does...)

OP - if you are on NAT2, and all the necessary ports for COD4 are forwarded, check your router's firewall logs to make sure they are open. if all of these things are true, then your friends will be able to play with you - make sure they do all the above as well!

Instructions a monkey could follow: http://portforward.com/

Last port from me on this, I promise...

    You're right, I'm sorry - I don't mean to be an ass, so I apologise. :-(

I guess I'm just sick of threads about port forwarding and NAT levels - same problem every day with different people asking the same questions. I also appreciate that you generally answer a lot of these queries, so fair play. I work as a network admin for a huge europe-wide electronic payment network and it gets tiring seeing all the "advice" people dole out on these topics...

What you misunderstand about port forwards is that they are for incoming connections to your router, not for outgoing - so in order for people to be able to access them from the internet, you have to ensure your firewall is also allowing access - simply forwarding a port is not sufficient on a lot of routers. I have had several routers over the years (linksys, belkin, netopia, zxytel) and the belkin one was the only one that automatically opened the firewall port for a forwarded port.

So, if the original poster has NAT 2 already, in order to fix his setup, he has to:

    a) ensure the COD4 ports are all forwarded (correctly) - http://portforward.com/
    b) make sure they are all accessible from the internet - (http://www.auditmypc.com/firewall-test.asp maybe?)

I propose that this will solve his problem without having to resort to NAT1. NAT1 will also fix his problem, but directly connecting any host to the internet without a firewall is bad practice - even if it is only a PS3...

Again, everything I say is my own opinion - If the original poster wants to go down the NAT1 route, fine by me. I would advise not to.

i know how ya feel i get a pain in the arse seein the same threads bout nat on another forum that i dont even reply to them anymore

coolio - now that we all kissed and made up, maybe the original poster will tell us if he got anything out of this thread (apart from a laugh at our expense...)

    OP - still broken?

well i presume if he uses the username and password in the connection settins on his router that it will work on nat 1

Finally got it working, my problem was that Im using 2 routers(well the modem, then a router to make it wireless) so I had to bridge the modem to the router, then finally I got NAT 1, wirelessly. It took ages to get my laptop working after, so now both work perfectly.
    Thanks for all the replies

NAT 1 Wirelessly???? Does that mean that any wifi connection will bypass your firewall? If so, very risky.
