so im playing a tournament on saturday coming which im trying to prepare for.

Its 25 to play and there's a decent pot for the winner so such a thing brings out the best, so im told most of the dublin team will be playing in this tournament so basically im screwed :D

anyone have any advice on how i should practice coming up to it to try raise my game to their standard. im really inconsistent, some legs i'll throw a 16 darter others a 29 darter. i can be a heavy scorer, but when i score heavy my doubles seem to let me down, when i hit my doubles well the scoring isnt as great.

Translate that into the almost guarunteed dip in form from practise board to tournament and im worried i might be one of the worst players playing and i'd hate to be humiliated

so has anyone got any tips, short games that are measurable to try improve my game. i'd love to progress through a round or 2 in this and i know if im playing well i would be these lads have experience of tournaments and i'll probably suffer from the proverbial Yips from the nerves of playing my second ever tournament against such quality.

Trust me when I say that there will be people who feel the exact same way you do walking into the tournament. If you are going to go into the tournament with this on your mind, you might as well not go.

The attitude that you should have is 'what the hell .....if they lose to me .....wouldn't they feel horrible'.

I have thrown against some of the top dart throwers in the world, and I have gone in with a smile and a laugh.

I once shot against Peter Manley (he was actually ranked #1 in the World at the time before the PDC re-did their point scheme) in a tournament in Cincinatti Ohio. We diddled, and I matched his bull, and then lost out on the next go. He opened up T20, T20, 20. I stood there shaking my head at him as he turned and walked back from the board and said 'I would have went for it' and smiled and he chuckled.

    1) Stay focussed with every dart - hardest part
    2) Take your time
    3) Have FUN !!

Back in the 90s before the PDC changed the way they rank players. Manley would go over to the States in the Spring and play in as many tournaments as possible to help increase his point totals. (The reason he was ranked #1 while Phil Taylor was winning the World Championship each year while only being ranked in the Top 5)

He would also shoot in the 'Bullshooter' which is the World Championship of plastic darts at the end of May each year.

We packed up the van and headed out to Cincinatti and a few of the PDC members were in attendance (Paul Lim, John Part etc.)

The Windy City Open used to bring in many of the Top pros as well. I remember seeing Dennis Priestly throw a nine dart @1995 or so.

Actually, they have Ronnie Baxter's trophy for winning the MVP of the WCO one year sitting behind the bar at The Thatch. It is used to store the house darts. lol He gave it to a few mates of mine who he ended up drinking with one night. Really cool guy.

thats mad, so you've mixed it with some pretty good players then mule?

tis an impressive resume to say you've played with or been around with these guys in competitions!

Keep in mind that I did play against them.......but I never came close to winning lol

My favorite moment was two mates of mine (from Tyrone and Kildare) got drawn against Bristow and Lazeranko in a doubles match. Well as expected Eric and Cliff wiped the board with them. The two lads invited them to a drink in the hotel bar where they ended up cleaning them up on the pool table. lol

The majority of pros are just like anyone else.

I think thats whats endearing about it

i went to old trafford on sunday for the united newcastle game, and on the way home in manchester airport, duffer and given were in the bar having a pint. mixing it with the animals so to speak.

A guy who was with me mark, looked over and said "Alright lads, great game today, yis both played brilliant" duffer blanked him and shay turned away.

as a newcastle fan, i was disgusted with them

Well i got to the semi final of my board, i got beaten by a guy who used to play for ireland

i guess its all the experience

Mick "The Magnet" Magowan won the tournament with jason and mick barry among the casualties along the way

One of the players threw 8 of the 9 darts for a 9 darter

    Great event
