workout question

    is doing cardio and weight workouts in one day/gym session counterproductive??
    should you do cardio one day and weights the next??

    It's counterproductive to think of weights (i.e. strength) and cardiorespiratory as distinct and unrelated adaptations.

    Your strength levels have an effect on your endurance. Also, LSD type cardio has a negative effect on hypertrophy (muscle growth).

    Probably not the answer you were looking for but hopefully it will get you thinking and asking questions.

    Apparently a separation of an hour is the minimum to see a benefit from both sessions. And the benefit of both increases the longer you separate them. Now I suppose you could do your strength work, take an hour's break and come back and do cardio, but not everyone has that time. You're better off doing them on seperate days.

    I was meaning to ask something similar myself. I'm now cycling to and from work (60 mins each way) as well as doing resistance training in the gym at lunchtime. Is this counter-productive? Is there anything I can do to maximise the benefits of both?

    (Sorry if I hijack the thread, I think my questions are along the same lines as the OP's.)
