What happened the Irish?

What had happened the Irish athletes in this olympics? Derval, Gillick, Carey to name but a few who have had a disaster.

Apparently they were left exhasted due to the travel arrangements from their base in Japan. Two flights and four (non air con buses), From Japan to the village. This is not even counting all the traveling to Japan the weeks before.

What was the Irish Council at. No wonder they are exhausted before they competed?

I don't no, its a good question. Yesterday was bad, this morning was nearly as worse except for Hesh. Travelling shouldn't affect these guys, they race on the circuit, many times in mickey mouse grand prix with connecting flights/trains/buses and run well. Having said that if the jaunt from Japan to Beijing ended up being a bit of a disaster then that was unneccessary. Lethargy does seem to be the issue with most of them, no zip in the legs, so something has happened.

Yeah I was reading Tom Chamneys blog a couple of days back and he was dreading the travel from Japan to Bejing. If there was only a single flight it would have been fine but all the connecting flights could not have helped.

Probably too early for a post mortom but it will be interesting to hear what the athletes thought of the location of the training base. In fairness to the AAI they did seem to think the base was the best option and it doesn't seem to be a case of bad preparation.

Maybe thy're just not good enough at this level?
All decent a t Eur level but let's be honest Eur level is not the Olympics. Or else they're not doping properly.

They are good enough to go further then they have though. Some have been unlucky with injury.

Yea i dunno , everyone expected better. Each indivdual athlete seemed to have their own excuse. Dervla O'Rourke had bad asthma all week etc.
Bejing was a bit far for most

Only one athlete, Gillick, has had, even by his own admission, a disaster.

O Keefe, injured and taking injections just to take part.
    Cudddihy, injured all year.
O Rourke - injured since the nationals- not on form this year anyway.
Carey, never actually made the A standard- only selected at last minute
Curley - similar story - but even worse for a marathoner- you need 6 months notice!
Britton, wasn't expected to progress- did well enough

Mcgettigan - made the final as expected - never likely to medal
Heffernan, 8th in the Olympics. Pretty good.

Lets see how others get on.
Please wait till its all over before a post mortem!

    Go Paul Hession!

If they were injured what were they doing there?

What woudl you do if you trained your whole life for an even and when it came around you have an injury that may or may not cause you problems, would you take a chance, i'm sure you would
