Was up getting some grub up in P Borza's on Mail Coach Road this evening.

And noticed a new addition to their menu - Battered Mars Bars for €1.40.

Was very tempted to try.. anyone ever had them?

It looks fúcking evil. Never tried one and don't plan on it. I was in Glasgow recently, surprised I didn't tried it when I was hammered there.

Thats just gross! I saw them on sale in Scotland, but they seem to deep fry everything there including pizzas.

Every single opinion I've found on the web so far is that they're gorgeous.

Might have to give it a shot next week.

i thought they were selling them for a while, kept meaning to go up there one day to try them, although would probably need a week of detox just to get over it

If you do try them let us know what they're like. I might give them a shot myself.

Lads they are as disgusting as they look. I had one a few years ago one night in either Longford or Mullingar, (I forget which town it was) after having a good few pints and have to say I don't think I will ever try it again. It's probably something you would only order while drunk though!

That really does look revolting. Honestly.

Let us know what you think though Basquille.

i got one in galway a while back, it was ok, but greasy as hell

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 486 ✭✭Mrs.T

I remember the first ever bar that was battered. It was started in a town near where I'm from..... it was big news then (probably because nothing else happened!).
I never tried them then and I don't think I'll ever try them. I don't like those bars anyway and I especially can't stand battered food. To think that going to the chippy was a special treat on a Friday night - blurgh (where is the puke smiley);)

That picture looks disgusting... I can't imagine it tasting any better.

    I've tried the following:

    - Deep Fried Snickers
    - Deep Fried Mar Bar
    - Deep Fried Dimebar
    - Deep Fried Bounty
    - Deep Fried Milky Way
    - Deep Fried Malteesers

General consensus, all fairly decent (hated the dime bar though!!!!) with some vanilla ice cream, but avoid like the plague if you don't want a heart attack or diabetes!!!!!

Looks like it should be climbing out of John Hurt's stomach.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

If you like these, you’d love Scotland.
I’ve never tried it but it’s on sale all over Glasgow. They seem to deep fry everything over there

Have you eaten them recently? I thought that it would be great to have a bag of potato fritters the last time I was home. The memory of them were much nicer than what they are actually like. Just thinking of the grease makes me want to heave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭magnumlady

I used to get spam fritters in the UK, haven't had one in years:(
So I might give the mars bar a try....don't know though.

I'd try the deep fried mars bar, or at least split it with Mr Xiney.

It'd probably make me ill, though.

You're a braver man than I irish-stew. Don't even want to even think about them. Awful. Heart attack food. Very popular in Scotland that's for sure. There is a reason for that.

...are you suggesting people living in Scotland have a reason to want to die?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,177 ✭✭✭DenMan

Of course not. Battered mars bars just happen to be popular there. Not sure why. A pal of mine came over from Inverness last year and asked where they available? Honestly couldn't help him, so he made his own. Not for me though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,085 ✭✭✭Xiney

    just checking ;)

Im sure its only a matter of time before someone writes the medical paper:

"Battered mars bars and the glasgow gap year"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 486 ✭✭Mrs.T

I reckon it's big in Scotland because it was "discovered" there. It doesn't help that the standard diet in Scotland is based on high fat and low fibre. Lucky I didn't acquire my sweet tooth until I moved here and was pregnant with our wee man *phew!*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,484 ✭✭✭JIZZLORD

I got one in Borzas today, it was excellent, much better than my galway one. the batter was nice and thick and chewy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,085 ✭✭✭Xiney

That particular example looks very tasty.

I'm not joking. I wonder how many calories is in one of those mofos?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,177 ✭✭✭DenMan

529 calories per bar. If that doesn't put people off, I don't know what will.
