Looking to get to the Rugby in Rome next February, but flights are approx €800 as it's obviously going to be booked out regardless.

Are there any alternatives, we can take a week or so and take a break elsewhere, looked at Milan-Rome train and it's €198 return:eek:

Any of you globetrekkers got any tips?

Fly anywhere in Northern Italy, hire a car/minibus and drive. Make a proper holiday out of it. If you fly in and out mid-week its cheaper too. You may even get to/from Rome mid-week nice and cheap too.

Lufthansa via Frankfurt is currently less than €200 I think

I'd look at that again. You can get from Munich to Rome one way for as low as €29.

Why not fly to one of the other Ryanair hubs (Paris, Liverpool, Glasgow, etc.)and then onto Rome?

Ryanair flights are only €800 (actually €423) because all the cheaper ones are sold to people who had the same idea as you, months ago...

Going via a country that does not know what rugby is would be you best bet.

Why Ryanair? If you have a week you can go wth Aer Lingus for less than half that. And you should recheck your train prices too. Milan-Rome return is about €110.

    re. high train prices.

Just like for airlines, normally the best fares for trains are available online from the company running the service.

Goto the italian railways direct rather than 3rd party websites and you will indeed see that train journeys in Italy are available for buttons.

The earlier poster is also correct that Munich -> Rome on the night train (and possibly even the DIRECT day train if memory serves me correctly) is only 29 euro each way. No fees or hidden charges either. Only a limited amount of tickets is available per train but if you book a decent amount in advance you'll be grand.
    www.db.de is the relevant website

Austrian rail also does similar deals to Rome from Vienna (which you can get to for buttons if you fly via Bratislava 60km down the road)
    www.oebb.at is the relevant website.
