At 4pm the festival closing ceremony along the Promenade in Tramore will take place, this links back to a tradition circa 1920 in Tramore where the ladies who worked the ‘Bathing Boxes’ on the beach for the season always held a festival at the close of season on ‘Michaelmas Day’ – they celebrated the end of season by making and carrying seaweed dolls around the town and then later throwing them into the sea, this tradition will be revived by the Surf and Sea Festival 2008, where on Sunday at the festival close a parade along the Tramore promenade with a sea weed doll will take place and then will be then thrown into the sea just like our seaside ancestors did nearly 100 years ago at 4pm on Sunday 21st of September. All are welcome to join in the parade which departs the Lifeguard station at 4pm.

Michaelmas Day denotes an equinox and change of season, surfing conditions in Ireland improve in the autumn / winter season so not only will this celebration close the summer season but it will also begin a whole new season for surfing.”

Sun, Sea and Surf are the order of the day as details of the Oceanic Surf and Sea Festival 2009 were launched on Tramore beach in County Waterford. The festival will take place on September 19 and 20 in the coastal town.

A ladies Surfing weekend will take place on September 19 and 20 which is sponsored by Women In Sport Ireland will be hosted as part of the festival, the ladies surf weekend hosts a packed programme of Pilate’s instruction sessions, Indian head massage for the pamper factor, Surf lessons an expression session as well as a BBQ and entertainment.

A Family Fun Day of surfing and entertainment will take place on September 20 with a fun filled programme of activities open to all on Tramore beach from 11am including Eco-walks, Kite Surfing, Surf Hire, Exhibitions and Kite Building, Martial Arts, Beach Volley Ball, Rock Climbing instruction, Orienteering, Sea Weed Workshops, Historian sessions and much more.

The festival took place for the first time in 2008 to huge success and a bigger programme is planned for the 2009.

The festival was thought up to revive a circa 1920’s Tramore tradition Michaelmas day, which was traditionally a women’s celebration and to celebrate the natural amenities in Tramore and we are celebrating that theme with the Ladies Surf Weekend during the festival.

A Monster Skate Jam will also be taking place on Sunday September 20 sponsored by Monster Energy Ireland.

The festival is being held at the close of the traditional bathing season in the sea side town and this is no coincidence; traditionally circa 1920 the ladies who worked the ‘Bathing Boxes’ on the beach for the season always held an event at the close of season on ‘Michaelmas Day’ – they celebrated the end of season and St Michael’s Feast Day the patron saint of seafarers by making and carrying seaweed dolls around the town and then later tossing them into the sea, this tradition will be revived by the Surf and Sea Festival, where on Sunday at the festival close a parade along the Tramore promenade with the sea weed doll will take place and which will be then thrown into the sea just like our seaside ancestors did nearly 100 years ago.

Michaelmas Day denotes an equinox and change of season, surfing conditions in Ireland improve in the autumn / winter season so not only will this celebration close the summer season but it will also begin a whole new season for surfing.

Further information on the festival can be found on www.oceanics.ie. To take part in the Ladies surf weekend email ladiessurfweekend@gmail.com

Ignore him. Nearly every thread I see him posting in he is bashing something Waterford related. In this forum it's the WSVR and Tramore, he got banned twice for trolling in the Waterford City forum, and in the GAA forum he's had a few gos at the Waterford hurlers.

w s v r must be doing something right as the number of passengers are way up on last year despite the recession.
they have extended the run from 40 minutes to 50.
they now go through a tunnel under the new by-pass up to the toll booths for the new bridge.

Thats because people wont travel for Local Bands . Fact and in Tramore we need people from Waterford to travel out .

We are looking at Sunday sessions and will go Local eventualy but need to put it on the map first . Avalon would be the best crowd puller for a Saturday night .Still some super bands in Waterford and we will fit them in along the way

Yeah all the local bands are playing in Waterford City every night of the week anyway so why would anyone from town come out to Tramore to see them.

And to be honest even though I live in Tramore I wouldn't be bothered going to The Venue to see most of the local bands.

Karma Parking are an original reggae/rock/funk fusion band based in the republic of Ireland. With a singer from France and a drummer from Zimbabwe, Karma Parking are a melting pot of cultures and influences, the result of which is a distinctive sound, unbound to any one genre. Though they all profess a diverse range of influences, each member brings his own musical penchant to the band.

    Solar Taxi

"She Dies With Beautiful Teeth" - the new EP from Solar Taxi sounds like a band that have landed on their feet. From the catchy opening electro pop of "The Fool" to the soulful acoustic "White Lights" , this diverse EP takes the listener on a journey that's very different to anything that's in Ireland at the moment. Their influences range from Goldfrapp, The Knife to 70's guitar bands such as Led Zeppelin. Lyrically the material takes on some heavier subject matter too, "the process & resolve of grief is something that's running through the EP, even the artwork, our personal experiences the last two years have really made us want to make these songs count"

    Fighting Spiders

Fighting Spiders were hatched in early '08 when members from previous band such as ilya k, Dae kim, and Ashley Sheehan & The Mute decided to collaborate. Conceived originally as a studio experiment, it wasn't long before the band decided to take their results to the stage. Early gigs took place along side the likes of Jape, Robotnik and Oppenheimer. Due to the instant positive feedback it gave the band all the ammo and information they needed to complete the infectious debut.

    Campain LK

The project 'Campaign' began back in 2008 in Limerick City when producer Soss, guitarist and drummer Davey Hatchet, rapper Weenz and guitarist and singer Brian O'Brian started writing music and recording together. Brian and Dave had been in a rock band together 10 years previous and were old friends. Soss had been producing beats for Weenz for around the same period, and the fusion of the group's contrasting backgrounds quickly produced some very interesting results.

    Chimpanbee

Having finished a successful mini tour between Cork and Dublin promoting their taster single "Sixties Man", Chimpanbee have now settled back into Ruby Studios to resume recording their Album "Can't Stop or Rewind". The successful release of their single "Sixties Man" has already propelled this young, tag-teaming foursome swiftly into the limelight, earning them such acholades as "Club traffiks hot tip for 2011".

    Trouser Snake

Trousersnake is a backlash against the bland, cookie-cutter alt-rock scene of the modern day; pumping vintage, thuggish sleaze rock back into the polluted airwaves. Since their conception in August 2008, the 'Snake have shared the stage with hard rock veterans such as original axe-grinder of Whitesnake, Bernie Marsden, as well as Pat McManus of the Mama's Boys, not to mention renowned contemporary acts including Jaded Sun and Stillroom.

Tramore amusements are doing fireworks again this year on 21st Aug.

I brought my god daughter last year and they were fantastic. Bit of a dose getting out of Tramore afterwards but worth it! :)

says 9.30pm on their website www.tramoreamusements.ie

Hope it gets a good crowd like last year :)
