Is it a must to ask the father of the bride for his daughters hand in marriage? I'm not traditional but my girlfriend is, should i worry about doing this?

You dont have to but if she feels strongly about it then its probably best to do it. Chances are she was brought up this way and the father would expect it too.

Good luck and be brave, I remember when I did it not that long ago!! :;) :D

Would it be very rude to do this over the phone? I live in the east and the brides father lives in the west. Obviously it's not ideal, what do you think?

I think its a good idea to ask the father if its something she likes the thought of.
But maybe over the phone is not the best way, if you have very little time then you'll have to do it over the phone. But try plan it so you actually see her father weeks or even months before you ask her...good luck.

This is a real can of worms every time it's posted here. Some people really see it as a sexist thing to do, and harp on about a woman not being property to be given away etc (yet would have their father walk down the aisle and give them away on the day itself).

Do what you think your girlfriend would want you to do. If she is traditional, then her parents are too and it will probably be the the easiest way to go about it.

I'm one of those people who sees it as sexist and outdated:) Then again I will be having no giving away, no asking of father's permission, etc etc.
OP if your girlfriend would like you to do the asking the father thing then do it but in person not over the phone.
