When I had 2 gigs of memory around 1.1 to 1.25 gigs would be in use with no programs running, well i got another 4 gigs and now I find 2 gigs is in use with no programs running, which is a bit strange , is it a case of if its there windows will use it ?

In Vista, its Prefetch. Vista monitors your computing habits and caches the stuff you use the most. Like if you usually start WMP at 6 o'clock after you come in from work every evening. it will pre-load it and have it ready, it loads the things it thinks you might use. Click firefox or something you use regularly and see how fast it loads, cos its already cached.

'sactly. The Redmond nerds did a good job with this feature: better to use ram than not in this case: storing prefetch data in ram means much improved loading times on your most used programs. Just another one of the great stealthy additions in Vista.
