Should I do a system restore???

Help! I seem to have fecked up this pc (windows vista on it) and I only have it 2 weeks.

It came with a network card but we only have dial up so we had to put modem from old pc into this. The driver it found wasn't a vista one so it kept going to blue screen on shut down. Thanks to help I got on this forum, I updated the modem via windows update and that problem was solved.

In the meantime, I had to do a system restore before the modem problem was solved which undid my installation of Norton and I have been unable to reinstall Norton despite 2 lengthy online chat sessions with Norton. They have just given up and given me a refund. So I have some Norton files installed but every time I boot up I get several norton error messages. Won't let me uninstall either. (PC came with Bullguard so will stick with this for the moment). I also failed to install finepix viewer, which I now realise I don't need, and this too is hanging around, half installed, giving error messages.

My question, after all that, is should I do a system restore back to the day I bought the machine and hope that this does the trick. I'm not good with files and where they should be and stuff. Will this get rid of any trace of Norton and Finepix or will traces of them linger, as it says it doesn't undo files and pictures, etc.

My head is wrecked with this. The only thing I think I need is the vista driver for the modem which I presume that I can download again through windows update.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Natacha :)

Thanks for that link but I presume if the Norton guys couldn't sort it, it might not work. The programe wouldn't configure properly, said some files were missing, but I'll try it anyway.

You can also undo a system restore, so no harm giving it a go. You may want to download your modem driver set up file and save it. somewher

Would it be only one files that is the driver? I located a .sys file by checking properties in the modem section in control panel. There was a list of .sys files but the version it stated applied to this particular .sys file.

hi,dont know if youve tried this already..but have you gone into the hidden system folders to check if there is any bits of norton files still in there?most of the time when programms are uninstalled they leave small bits of it behind which now and again can really mess things up.be careful though :-)

Thanks Guil07. It worked at treat. No sign of Norton anywhere. Even the Norton Phishing toolbar in Explorer is gone. Can't understand why the Norton guy didn't suggest this. What's that about? I can put up with the finepix error message as it doesn't seem to interfere with anything.

Taz30, think I should keep away from interfering with files as I'm such an amateur! :o

this forum is only deadly! Yee've solved 3 problems for me in the last few weeks!

Personally I'd have taken it back to have the system reset. But you have your norton refund so grand - I like norton well enough but there you go.

To resolve the finepix situation try downloading CCleaner running the registry cleaner: check all the options except for unused file extensions, back up the registry file when it prompts you to just in case, and fix all selected problems. To be thorough, re-do the scan and fix 2-3 times.

I liked Norton too, used to using it for 3 years but it was too much hassle. Hubbie can get McAfee for a home pc free with his work. Will get that so.

Thanks for recommendatioin on the ccleaner. will do that.

I agree with overheal. If it is only 2weeks old, i'd just reinstall the os. Back up an files etc to an external hd or dvd.

A bloated registry will slow down the computer till you throw it out or reformat it.

I appreciate the advice. what do you think of Bullguard? It came with teh machine, 90 days free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

bullguard is one of those things you seldom see and ever hear of. i have no idea. norton I.S, and Nod32 are pretyy up there though.

    avg all the way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,772 ✭✭✭Lazarus2.0

90 free days of bulldog is 89 days too many - It takes a day to realise what a phoney it is . AVG is great (and it's free!) but I would only ever use ESET/NOD32 on my PCs

    Nessyguin, what is ESET/NOD32?

NOD32 is an antivirus written by ESET , who also do a full security suite (Anti-Virus and Firewall) . I cant categorically state they are the best as that is all subjective but certainly they're my preference .
