Triathlete who's not a great swimmer

    Hey all,
    I've done a few triathlons over the years, nothing serious just half distance ones like Focus Ireland etc. Thing is I've got a bit of a mental block when it comes to the swimming part. I just find it impossible to do any stroke over distance that isn't the breaststroke. It gets me there but it's as slow as hell. Any tips on front crawl over distance?
    On the other hand if I wanna get back into triathlon seriously would it be viable to concentrate on improving my breaststroke? Would triathlon Ireland accept a noobie who is a relatively good cyclist/runner but struggles on the swim?

    Simple. Get a coach. Swimming is around 20% power and 80% drag reduction. Don't believe me?... why then do 9 year old girls who train most mornings beat 35 year old rugby players over a 50m free sprint?
    Several sessions of one-on-one with a coach will give you a good technique base. But you will then need to spend at least half of one session a week doing really stupid looking drills :o

    For my 1st and only triathlon so far, I was nervous about not having that quick breather break like you get at the end of every length in the 25m pool. So I went at a nice & very relaxed pace at the start and within 5 minutes I was in a nice rhythm and doing a nice speed, so I stayed at this cruising speed till about 50m to go, when I up'd it a good bit. I found 1500m was not a problem once I paced myself. I found that ignoring how fast other people are going helps, thus forget about trying to keep up with people. Alot of peope seem to go hell for leather at the start only to suffer further on. I find that if I go too quickly at the start, I get tired, and its then as if my breathing is always trying to play catch up even if I ease up, and I therefore never get really comfortable unless I stop for few mins.
