I don't know how many of you have already read about this but MF DOOM, a guy I'm a fairly big fan of (music wise), has screwed over a lot of fans by sending a stand in to his gigs dressed as him and lip syncing to his records. This has got to be one of the scabbiest things I've heard about in a long time. There's no better way to piss off a fan base than to rip them off like this. The thing is he's done it on a number of occasions. If you're going to be like that don't have a concert at all, wasting fans time and money by pulling off bullshit like this.

Kno (Cunninlynguists) has written an open letter to him which is a pretty good read.

I must say I've lost an awful lot of respect for Mr Dumile over this.

I heard a rumor a while back about him doing it.

Although I like him as an artist, he loses points over that sort of carry on.

Yeah there has been rumours of him doing this for ages.

Not a big fan tbh, not that bothered.

Ya, no loss of sleep there anyway, he is well over rated. A lot of people who are into him jumped on the bandwagon cos he was the cool, underground, 'nothin commercial about this' rapper. In reality he's poor enough. Especially that MMM Food album.

That's sad to hear. I'm a big fan. I'd be fairly pissed off about that, I'd love to see one of his shows and that wouldn't be on. Surely he knows the sh*t that fans have to put up with at concerts nowadays? I, myself will only shell out for shows that are 'must sees' at this stage with prices, and being treated like **** lining up, being ripped off inside and still the chance of being turned away. If DOOM was coming to Ireland I'd have bought a ticket no matter the cost.
I'd like to see how this progresses. He's tremendously talented, I just can't see how any artist could do this to their fans.

I've pratically worn out Madvillainy and Vaudeville Villain I've played them so much. Best hip hop albums of the century so far.

He doesn't do very many shows. I don't know that he's even played anywhere in the last 12 months. Things are very, very quiet. He's also got some visa problem which means he's never going to play Ireland or anywhere outside the US so I don't see why it's much concern to us.

My point for starting this thread was to discuss how shady this business is from MF DOOM not whether it will affect us as fans (or not).

It doesn't matter if you don't like him or never plan to see him or if he will never be granted a visa to perform over here. This is a guy just blatantly ripping off his fans. In this day of the starving artist because people "steal" all their music, touring is how they make the money. If you're going to rip off those fans that are willing to see you then it's really just a big fuck you to them.

The fact that it's potentially going to further impact other artists because the venue mentioned in the Kno letter is now less inclined to book other Hip-Hop artists hurts the independent community as a whole.

Unlike Daft Punk, who have been accused of this too, MF DOOM is actually there to perform songs you can't send a proxy to lip synch for you like Daft Punk can send stand ins to play a premixed set. Why should anybody pay for gigs if the artist can't even be bothered to show up?

i remember reading bout this earlier in the year to and i think is fooging outrageous. how can an artist expect their fans to support them if they themselves won't show up for live performances and send out somebody else to lip sink the material. and as far as having problems with his visa, he was able to fly in to Manchester (i think) to be part of the Gorillaz live show last year????? i bet there was alot more money involved there then at any of the gigs that he had a stand in for. i was never the biggest doom fan to begin with (although i do love the dangerdoom projects) and with stories like that i don't think i'm gonna become one now!

HAHAAAAAAAAAAAA... the open letter is class.

Even if it is written by that nutter!

Refering to the fact some promoters are saying they wont book 'normal' hiphop acts folowing Doomgate...

'But on the flipside, seeing talent buyers publically saying they’ll only book “alternative artists” like Sage and Atmosphere (Holy awkward racial undertones, Batman)'

'Yeah, you’re the “villain” or whatever gimmick you use to sell records. I’ve even seen a couple people calling this fiasco “brilliant”. Oh, the sweet Rap Snack™-flavored irony of anti-mainstream types letting this slide by deeming it “genius marketing”. Genius marketing? Beanie Babies, Hannah Montana, Girls Gone Wild. Those are examples of genius marketing. This looks like a lazy or medically incapacitated individual duping his most dedicated fans repeatedly to the tune of a few thousand dollars while those that also stand to profit (read: labels, friends and booking agents) scuttle around attempting to make excuses for him before the loot dries up.'

HAHA... I'm not a fan of DOOM, but the letter is gas...
