    Hi,

Basically I am in a strange situation and I need some advice.

I studied acting in a NY drama school and got my Associates degree, the equivalent of a diploma in Ireland. I decided i wanted to finish my BA but instead of going home and starting from scratch I decided to go to LA and finish it there. I now have a BA in Fine Arts, Cinema and my major was Producing.

I studied alot of theatre while in NY and plays etc. For my BA i mainly studied film but marketing, PR and some business related classes. I am 25 yrs old.

I wish to return home and would like to get into teaching is there any course I can teach with my qualifications or what would I need to do to be able to teach secondary school students

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I'm not an expert in the secondary HDip but with an overseas degree, I would expect that you'd need to have it assessed and recognised by the Teaching Council.

If I was you, I'd be giving them a call. Theres certainly a chance that you could do a 1 year HDip for secondary teaching, if you can match secondary school subjects to your degree.

Again, the Teaching Council would have to decide I expect. Maybe someone else here can offer more information.

    Good luck!

This is a difficult one, you have to get your degree assessed by the Teaching Council, but at a guess, I'd say they wouldn't allow you to teach anything at secondary level. You could do the primary teaching postgrad though so that might be an option for you.

The primary teaching postgrad in Ireland is really only an option if you've an honour in Leaving Cert Irish.

Just for your info -- I did 4 year honours degree in Earth Science in galway and went to apply for the HDip - had to get it assessed by the Teaching Council who took 4 years worth of college notes & practical notebooks, 230 ish quid, a few trips out to Maynooth and nearly 7 months to get back to me, to say 'no' I'm not eligible for the HDip for second level teaching in geography.

You probably will have to apply to them for it - but they seem to be rather picky - but you might as well try. good luck

There have always been difficulties, even pre-Teaching Council, with the recognition of US primary degrees.

I hate to be another negative but I'd imagine you would have an uphill battle. You haven't stated in your post what subjects you are interested in teaching. Based on your information I would say your degree 'falls between stools', i.e. elements of business, art, media etc.

Generally to teach a recognised subject the TC will want want you to have the subject as a clear 50% of an honors 3/4 year degree. Doing some classes in Business would not constitute 50% of a dregree. Your degree seems mostly media, you could look at teaching in NI perhaps?

It sucks, and anyone who has had to deal with the TC will back me up in that they are neither flexible nor efficient when it comes to recognising qualifications from abroad.
