Alright boys and gals, i'm heading off to the states in the next month or so and am thinking about buying one of these. Now, what are your opinions on them? I've been playing for years, main guitar is an upgraded mex strat that i love, +various other guitfiddles. Now i'd hope to pick one of these up for the sub 1000 mark, a lot of cash, which has me wondering if they're worth it. I'm a massive Blues fan and love Stevie Ray, but with so many other guitar makers out there, like the bacchus' of the world i'm caught between going for the fender of my dreams or taking the plunge on a bacchus strat and possibly upgrading, which would work out cheaper.
(I may not get a chance to reply for a good while, but i'm still interested in your replies!:pac:)

I recently sold a Fender strat in order to make room for a Bacchus strat. Fender make lovely guitars, but the attention to detail that goes into the likes of Bacchus (and it goes into every guitar, not just the super expensive models) just makes them a much better proposition tbh. Their pickups are among the best I've heard too. I've never played a regular Bacchus strat yet, but I have complete faith in it being superior based on the other Bacchus I have played. Plus, sig models usually involve some money going to the big name on the headstock, I'd rather all the money I pay going on the cost of making the guitar rather than a chunk being a royalty.

Don't listen to the Doc, he's payed by the letter by Bacchus. It's a scam! :D

Seriously though, I'm sure you could get a spectacular guitar for the money, so I would only go for the SRV Strat if it's something you've played before, and you feel it's the best guitar for you, otherwise you'd probably get a better instrument in the Bacchus.

If you really want it, then go for it. However, I think you're money could be better spent on a used standard or deluxe strat and then replace pickups and other stuff as you see fit. Then you'll have a really nice guitar and it will probably cost you less. You'll still have a strat at the end of the day.

You see, I'd be of the opinion that if you're paying the kind of money a deluxe strat costs, you shouldn't need to replace anything - for that kind of money you can quite easily get a guitar which doesn't need an overhaul in order to be a really nice guitar.

Well, it will be a nice guitar already, but you could make it suit you more for maybe less than the price of an SRV sig. Very few people will get close to thier ideal guitar straight out of the box anyway regardless of price (customs aside).

At the end of a day, if you want a Fender SRV strat, buy a SRV strat.

There's nothing like setting your heart on something particular, saving hard, and eventually buying it. They're a good guitar, and you'll likely get years or even decades of enjoyment out of it.

BUT, if you just want a high-quality Strat-type guitar, for the best possible money, well, you've said it yourself, there's tonnes of great options out there, at various price ranges.

Its impossible for anyone else to decide if you specifically want that one guitar, or just a similar high-quality Strat copy.

A lot of good playing (or even the will to play) involves inspiration. If it inspires you and makes you want to play more if you're playing Stevie's guitar, then go for it!

Thanks for all the replies lads, i think it's a case of try before i buy. I've only played the SRV strat a couple of times (briefly), the nice fat neck is a big reason for wanting one, pickups are good also. I'll have plenty of time in the states to try them out, i mgiht even go the second hand route to save some cash.
    Cheers everybody.
    Alan.

Ah, in fairness, need to replace isn't the best description, you could get a fantastic guitar and the pickups mightn't be to taste exactly, someone mightn't want Duncans and might put EMGs in there instead. Or in the case of the Strat, change to the kind of pups that SRV used. It's not exactly a need, but more customising to taste.
