    Acceptable, yes.
    Manly, no.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

    Yeah it's perfectly acceptable.
    If you're a woman.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 35,945 Mod ✭✭✭✭dr.bollocko

    Aw C'mere you.
It is only acceptable if he has saved your life. Or the two of you have just broken into a pub after closing time. Or in a war movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

    It's only acceptable when:

    1. You're related/stupidly close and haven't seen eachother in months/years because one was held hostage in a foreign country.
    2. When your favourite rugby/football/Gaa/hurling team have just scored a goal/try/point in the final seconds of injury time in the second half of the cup/league final which has won the match.
    3. When you're saving him from falling by holding onto him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 120 ✭✭raptorman

I can honestly say I've never being involved in a man embrace!

    Close family member dying.

Last minute goal/try/penalty/wicket/basket/ when your team wins an amazingly important match.

My Father in law has started hugging me for some reason.

I agree with Des, last minute goals, winning the FA cup, seeing Christiano Ronaldo get sent off/buggered senseless or an England bowler get a hatrick against top order Australian batsmen are the only normally acceptable times.

I hate hugs, can't stand them at all not sure why.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,496 ✭✭✭Mr. Presentable

Not a problem, unless you have a sexual insecurity, so long as hands don't drop below waist

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 787 ✭✭✭mikewest

    3. When you're saving him from falling by holding onto him.

What and get myself killed as well?

Nah, no real problem with hugs but you have to wonder about the sexuality of guys who are afraid to give / receive a hug. What are they afraid of? that they're going to get a boner

I laughed out loud at work at Jaws the love film. Brilliant Galvasean

As long as the hug doesnt involving squeezing each other tight then its fine.

There's nothing wrong with hugging your mates.

Male greetings between mates are a good slap on the back, how ye doin yer **** and that's it. anything else is gay.

Hugging is acceptable, nay required, when drunk. It serves to remind you where you are, as well as keeping you and your beshtesht mate in whole wdie world ever ever upright.

No problem as long as it is brief and there are several hearty manly back-slaps involved.

Not a male so I doubt my opinion is relevant to the topic at hand, but I hate them as well.

    Do

Avoid the groin area during hugs

Hug to celebrate a sporting victory/birth/engagement/marriage – what better time to share the love?

Hug your dad – family is a safe bet

Avoid eye contact, this is a hug not a romantic embrace

But look where the other person is heading – head butts hurt

    Don’t

Slap more than four times on the back for fear of inducing a coughing fit

    Hug at work

Hug your father-in-law unless he hugs you first

Look at a hug-making attempt with contempt – are you a man at ease with his sexuality or not?

Hug for more than a couple of seconds, there’s a fine line between a man hug and man hunt

Two men should always avoid hugging when there is a risk of "protrusions", such as after watching a Shakira video or a porn movie.

Man hugs are completly acceptable but having a a semi horn is a major no no.;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭hada

    depends on the circumstances:

i.e. acceptable: after victory in either, a) testosterone filled sport
    b) euromillions (national lottery does not suffice)

not acceptable: any other time... except, well, if you're "into that kind of thing"..if you get my drift! ;)

The only good thing about being Irish, after the ginger gene.
Is that we don't do hugs.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, as long as it's not done too often or too enthusiastically.

OMG what is wrong with you people

its is never acceptable to hug anyone unless you are in a intiamate relationship with the other person.
