How long do yous all reckon you can keep up living at night, etc?
The 9-5 mon-fri is all but enivatible for most people unfortunately :(
Or have you got a life plan that will let you fit your work around leisure time, rather than vice versa?

Or maybe I just don't udderstand this forum :pac:

A lot of the posters here are too young for 9-5 yet.

I'm a shift worker, but eventually my responsibilites will shift to a more normal time period.

I actually like living at night. I have alot of solitary pursuits (drawing being the main one) in which the quiet is a great advantage.

having settled down with my partner, i find myself as close as im ever likely to be to the 9-5 at this point. could have to be up any time between 5am-10am to get to work on time, depending where/when im working on the given day.

back during my 72hrs shifts days, particularly wehn living in ireland and being in love with someone in new zealand, i rarely slept while twas dark out.

I actually love the 9-5 thing. I finished college two years ago but it's still somewhat a novelty to go to work, and then go home and that's it, no work to do, no part-time jobs to go to. The same goes for weekend.

I really like the routine of 9-5 and going asleep at the same time every night. I'm only nocturnal because I'm in a time zone 11 hours ahead.*

*please don't kick me out for this confession!

I do 7.30-3.30 when I am on days for the same reason. i never want to be exactly 9-5.

Still end up sitting on the bus for nearly an hour sometimes in the evenings so it doesn't really help too much :(

Buses tend not to save time, but do save on money! Is it not even a more comfy trip at 6.30 though?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,367 ✭✭✭✭watna

If it helps, the buses here are like that too. I usually work 8.30 - 5 (which for some reason are really popular hours in NZ). I wasn't feeling well this morning so went in at 10 instead. The bus was full and took ages even though the rush hour was technically over. Tis mad!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,196 ✭✭✭Crumble Froo

    <3 christchurch buses.

Mostly nocturnal cos work means I'm in different timezones.

I have a 9-5. It's really not that bad, it's some nice midweek structure that i enjoy or else i tend to go slightly off the rails.

I work during the day to pay the bills, i work at night to keep me sane and work towards the old future. My normal rule is comp and tv off by one and then i'll write or paint ( terribly...it's been a while ) or work on photos ( comp on but net off! ) or just read until i get sleepy.

The last couple of weeks have been good, i seem to be in a pretty solid and happy place and have been sleeping well for a change.

    Ouch, that's harsh man.

    How do you find it?

Don't think hes on it yet, but I'd say it will be anything but harsh! :)

Used to be the internet kept me up =(
But none of that up here in Dublin, so it's just the 10 - 6 for me...

Yea, haven't started yet, but I don't think it'll be too bad actually. Don't mind staying up all night, my sleep pattern will just be a bit ****ed for awhile.

I get shift allowance as well, so its not all bad.

used to do 9-5:30 absolutely hated it, boring warehouse work.

got a job this year where as long as i was in the office at 9:30-3:30 and clocked up 7 hours i could work any hours.

i loved that, but i think it was more to do with it not being boring warehouse work.

Your story is like mine, I was in a retail job and moved into IT proper and I love it, partially because it is not retail!

Not really. If its wet like it has been the last while your either stuck beside some weird person on the bus and trying to squeeze your knees into the small space or having to stand the whole journey. Occasionally with an old or smelly person trying to talk to you, even though you clearly have headphones in your ears and listening to the radio/music.

I work 9-5.30 and still manage to be a nightowl. Im never quite fully awake in work before 11 (aided by caffeine usually) and I have an awful time getting up in the morning.

My brothers the same as me but him being younger than me he's better than me at rising in the morning. I'm horrendous, Im literally a morning zombie, always end up rushin because I get up too late.

My problem is I train at night (usually finish around 10) and then Im too alert to sleep afterwards. I end up online lookin at random useless crap until 1-1.30 most nights. Lately Ive been studing until 11 at night so I get home and need to unwind before bed!

Cant go to bed early either cos I usually get p1ssed off and get back up!

But being a nightowl and goin 9-5 hasnt affected me too much so far, bar the chronic fatigue, and Ive been doin it over a year now!

I work 9-5 Mon - Fri and I still manage to find a small bit of my time to swan around this dark corner of the interweb. Mind you I will regret it when my alarm goes off in 6.5 hours :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

I only work the 9-5 now and then, mostly when I'm working in a college, or back in college myself, the rest of the time I'm working all over the shop.

I wish I got enough beauty sleep though. :(

9-5 really doesn't suit me. Tried it once for a summer job in a radio station. These days I start at 8pm an finish between 2:30 and 4:00am. Once or twice a week I work 11-3 then 9 to close. I usually only work 4 nights a week. It works well for me with the band etc too.
