    http://www.imdb.com/chart/top?tt0111161

    1. 9.1 The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 360,704
    2. 9.1 The Godfather (1972) 309,130
    3. 9.1 The Dark Knight (2008) 225,161
    4. 9.0 The Godfather: Part II (1974) 175,499
    5. 8.9 Buono, il brutto, il cattivo., Il (1966)

Sweet Jesus, talk about a disgrace. How could it get so many votes? They're gonna have to remove it or the list loses all credibility IMO.

It was number 1 up until today. IMDb top 250 at the end of the day is meaningless really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

LotR were really high up the list upon release, but thankfully common sense is slowly prevailing, and they're falling away.

IMDB rankings for newer films are always skewed.

HaHa gas too see so many people were annoyed by it that they decided to vote to get it knocked off.

There should be a year long cooling off period on IMDB while the fanboys have a chance to cool down and the haters for the sake of it move on to hating the latest decent film. But as mentioned above, the imdb top 250 isn't really of much use.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 740 ✭✭✭steveone

in my own personal opinion i'd agree that it is up there in my top three movies...
the last time i left a cinema wanting to be the villain was in the strand cinema in fairview, star wars....
and here i am thirty years later.......

I really liked TDK but all the hype and ridiculous praise it's been getting won't do it any favours in the long run. Fanboys are incredibly fickle. Just watch, there's going to be a massive backlash and come a few years from now everyone will deny ever really loving it.

I agree that IMDB should have a waiting period before films are eligible for the top 250.

I think you should just stop caring about the imdb top 250.

Next person who posts a TDK thread should be cast away from boards!!!!

Any list that has godfather as the second best movie of all time looses credibility with me straight away.

True, a bit rediculous alright. But the list overall is not too bad. I think they should have a waiting time of a few years before a film can be "entered", like Johnny was saying above.

But really, how can any self respecting movie fan give TDK 10.0, which I'm sure alot of were needed. if I was rating I would have given it 7.0.

    Nonsense.

TDK is a good film, maybe even a great one, if that's your bag. But a film can't be realistically considered one of the greatest of all time so close to its launch. Marketing in the film world is such to day that almost any film is hyped to being the best ever close to its launch. A moratorium is a good idea. Anyway, why does IMDB have to be the decider of all thats great?

The Godfather was epic. Best film of all time is Cinema Paradiso, I wouldn't have TDK in my top 10 but I thought it was still a great watch.

    IMDB Fanboys

The ratings are a good indicator, personally I'd watch anything over 6.0

If you removed all the 10/10 and the 0/10 from TDK ratings, I think you'd get a truer reflection.

This happened with Wall-e a few weeks ago on imdb and that's even still at 26.

I'd say that's already happening. A quick browse of this thread would suggest that you have to be a fanboy or have no self-respect to dare to give the film 10/10.

Which I did. It's pretty rare for me to enjoy a film as much (and following repeat viewings) as I did with TDK.

You mean best movie as voted by teenagers?
"Superhero movie" and "best of all time" don't belong in the same sentence.
No-one will remember The Dark Knight a decade from now.

Anywhoo, I don't see why people get so obsessed by the IMDb top 250 list. It's just an opinion poll.

This film should not even be mentioned in the same breath as Apocalypse Now, The Godfather, Once upon a time in the west.

Lists such as the IMDB 250 are only populated by balllickers anyway. Instead of calling it the IMDB 250 it should be titled, "You are all the ball lickers".

    :pac:

TDK isnt perfect, but it is one of few films Ive gone to see twice in the cinema and really is a fantastic film. Obviously emotions are running high as its so close to the launch, but it will go down in cinematic history imo.

Come on now. In fairness, it was covered by a poster (that was never ripped down in all the cell searches and all the times that he pissed the wardens and guards off in the space of 20 years while also not having a cellmate or moving cells.)

I watched SSR just again last night. Good film, but not as spectacular as made out. Its not even in the same league as The Godfather(s), (well, maybe Godfather 3 :pac:)

Shawshank is waaaaaaaay over rated, a good film but not the best ever. like how could a film that is that long set in a american prison in the 40s/50s not have 1 bit of racism and i hate the way tim robbins is just so perfect :mad::mad:

It's one of my favourite films and i don't think it's overrated at all, they made Tim Robbin's character a little too squeaky clean. It was left to the other cast members to provide most of the drama. Also, the script had a few dud lines in it, but overall it was a superb film

Completely agree, thats down to the director and script writer though, King worte Red as an Irish man. They should have addressed the racism part at some point in the film.

But then, I dotn over analise movies like they are my children and give out to anyone who dares have a bad word about somethign thats on the sacred list. I just watch and enjoy movies.

But, although I may get absolutely thrased for this, neither will 'The Dark Knight'.

It's a great film... best superhero movie to date but wait til the hype dies down.

Don't get me wrong.. it'll still remain a fantastic film but I don't think 'The Dark Knight' will go down as a "stone-cold classic" by any means either.

To be honest there is no such thing as the best film of all time just as there is no such thing as the best song of all time.
To even argue about it is futile.
There are good films and there are bad films.
But a small percentage of films are great films ,perhaps 50 films.
I'd rate The Dark Knight and The Shawshank Redemption as great films.
Shawshank probably has some of the best dialogue of any film I have ever seen.

i see nothing particulary special in the dialogue in shawshank
its a very sentimental flim , most of the prisoners are thoroughly unrealistically nice guys , at least you dont also have ultra nice guards like in the green mile but there still a little bit too sweet

Agreed. Good film, very good film. But threw on Batman (1989) the other day though and still think it's much better that TDK.

Yeah I'd agree too. Not like Shawshank is a bad film - it is a very entertaining one - but the whole film is very contrived, conservative and a bit overly sentimental at the end of the day. I do enjoy rewatching it every now and again as it is a great at what it does, but definitely wouldn't consider it one of my favourites.

But I do agree with Basquille on the Dark Knight - it is a fantastic superhero film, and may be a while before its topped, but once the hyperbole dies down it should be applauded as simply an A grade blockbuster rather than the second coming. TDK has passed the stage of simply being a film - it has kind of bypassed that and become more of a cultural event, with the hype a different entity to the film itself.

And again though, I really think the IMDB top list is a glorified popularity contest at the end of the day, and not worth getting annoyed over.

If it's light hearted, then why so serious? (oh lol)

I'm just of the opinion people need to take these polls with a pinch of salt, IMDB isnt the be all and end all, it's not definitive... there are people who really exagerate it's importance.

    Here are just a few

Red: Get busy living… or get busy dying. That’s god damn right.
Red: They send you here for life… and that’s exactly what they take.
Andy Dufresne: Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
Warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton): Lord it’s a miracle! Man up and vanished like a fart in the wind!
Red: I’d like to think that the last thing that went through his head, other than that bullet, was how the hell Andy Dufresne ever got the best of him.
Red: I find I’m so excited I can barely sit still, or hold a thought in my head. I think it’s the excitement only a free man can feel. A free man at the start of a long journey who’s conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

BTW I've seen Pulp Fiction about 20 times ,it is a great film .

Do any of us really care?

An internet poll doesnt make it official, everyone has their own personal top 10 list. Some will have TDK at the top, others will have batman and robin (im looking at you Joel!).

All that matters is what you consider a good movie, feck IMDB and the fanboys who bow down before it and accept it as the truth. I think TDK was class, I couldnt give a rat's bony behind what some 14 year old dork who has to post "first!!!!!!" on superherohype thinks.

Bah, I'm getting old, bring me another pillow.

Also, thanks for that Mister Anarchy, havent seen that movie in ages, Freeman's little voiceover at the end is pure class, the man could make penguins marching in the snow sound interesting....

If we were all to agree how boring would the world be and how would anyone come up with a great movie when we all were looking for the same thing.

Shawshank is in my top five as well but so is TDK now, the Godfather, The Third Man but my numero uno is the The Big Lebowski.
