Misleading trailers

What is the most misleading trailer you ever saw for a movie? Maybe because the trailer was so amazing and the film a let-down, or the film turned out a lot better than you thought, or maybe because the trailer led you to believe you were seeing one type of movie, like a comedy, but it ended up being more of a drama.

The trailer for The Exorcism of Emily Rose was completely misleading. It painted a picture of a gripping horror film when the film was a drama. Good flick tho.

Be Kind Rewind was pitched more as a comedy than as a... well Im not sure what it was but I liked it.
    Never mind.

the fight club pre=publicity was all messed up. it was billed as just an underground bare knuckle fighting movie.

turned out to be a masterpiece though..

i always thought the red eye trailer looked class-the movie is poor though.
I just hate it when trailers show way too much.

Borat, if you've seen the trailer, you don't need to see the movie.

Wanted, falls into that category too, just watch the trailer and save yourself a few quid

The Constant Gardener trailer at one point shows Ralph Hinnes Character holding a Gun. Not once in the movie does he have one. It has been some time since I seen it but I remember remarking on that particualr point on the post movie chat.

Bridge to Terabithia is pretty famous in America for doing this. The film itself was a success, but only because the trailer turned what is a very modest story into a potential LOTR/Narnia beater, showing off every single special effect in the entire movie in about 2 mins!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 891 ✭✭✭rejkin

Reign of fire was a big one,the advert posters showed commanches over london makin ya think it would have the army fighting the dragons but no,there was none of that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 454 ✭✭CrazyTalk

The trailers for In Bruge make it look like an action comedy, kind of like Snatch, but the film itself, while still great, is actually quite slow moving until the third act.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28 AlonsoX

It was supposed to be a comedy, but was the worst load of sh*t ever.

The Breakup, thought it was going to be side splitting like the Wedding crashers instead its just not funny and ****e.

Sweeny Todd - They make out like it is not a musical and in doing so show every single bit of dialogue in the whole film.

    The Shining.

What? Take a look at this trailer, very misleading...that was not a happy night:P

The trailer for Stranger Than Fiction had me thinking I was going in to see a comedy! I thought the trailer was funny, but the movie turned out to be a really heavy drama. There were only about three funny scenes in the whole thing! I don't know why they decided to market it as a comedy. I did enjoy the movie though.

Into the Blue. Expected a mystery underwater discovery type movie with tension and twists, got a brainless actioner headlined by the one, the only, Paul Walker. :(

Still though, the price of entry alone was worth the underwater shots of Jessica Alba's crotch :D

Pans Labyrinth jumped out at me when I seen that title.

First all the trailers I seen had no dialogue other than the english "One man.." voiceover. No where in the trailers did it indicate it was subtitled. This wasn't a bad thing as I don't mind subtitles but it was still misleading.

Secondly, it pushed it as a fantasy adventure like LoTR, Spiderwick Chronicles, Narnia or Labyrinth.

What I got was a subtitled period drama set in Spain in the mid 40's and this girl who blocks out the reality of her life by making up fantasies in her head. The trailers basically show all of the fantasy scenes from the movie, which make up probably 10% of the whole movie.

Don't get me wrong it's a good movie, but it was flagrantly misadvertised

i'll neverforget I remember a few years ago and i'm sure noone will remmember this film but there was a film on sky with antino Banderas, now the adds on sky MADE THE FILM LOOK LIKE JESUS CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD AND STARTED ATTACKING PEOPLE WITH EXPLOSIONS AND STUFF

I said i'd have to watch to see how they could get away with it but actually the film was about AB as a priest who investigates the discovery of the bones of jesus and sky had edited in the couple of explosions and scene with jesus which was a dream sequence.

That really p1sses me off and it happens alot. When they show something in the trailer and it sticks in your mind, and when you go and see it, the scene is nowhere to be seen.

The King Kong (Jackson) trailer showed the monster fish which never made it to the cinema cut.

Check out this trailer for Jaws:

In Mars attacks the there was a few of them IIRC. I think this was more promotional than changing scenes or cutting etc. One was when they had just arrived in their spaceship looking down on us saying "Earth.. we'll take it!"

Syriana as it was a slow burning political drama. My bro thought it was going to be an action movie.

Wasn't that in the films climax?

Heh! When I saw the thread title and scrolled straight back to post #1 I immediately thought of Wall-E...Then I read the thread a little and I already posted it :D

    🤪

    I didnt get that

A little off topic but the Channel 4 ads for Dirty Sexy Money were completely misleading... I got the impression it was going to be a dark gripping drama but then I looked at it one day and it was a load of dull dry patethic ****e.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,082 ✭✭✭Fringe

Definitely Hancock. The trailers showed a brilliant potential for a comedy until you realise those were the only funny moments in the movie and you get this terrible dramatic superhero love story.

the mummy, tomb of the dragon empire. i taught the trailer made it look brilliant when in actuall fact, the trailer showed the only good moments of the film, (not a great film imo).

Terminator 3 - I thought there was going to be a massive battle.

Which ever one of those epic movie /superhero movie sh!te that came out first..Think it was epic movie..Trailer looked good but i heard the reviews (thank god) before i even saw it so never went.

ive a feeling Ghost Town (Ricky Gervais) is gonna be sh!te too..Anyone notice the whole trailer is all from the same scene.Which seems to indicate thats the only funny part of the film??

Night Watch was one that was very misleading indeed. Every trailer boasted of it being a Matrix beater of sorts, throwing every moment of high octane action (which there a very few moments of in the actual film) into a minute long montage of madness. The actual film turned out to be very different indeed. Was a far more 'talky' affair, and was hugely different (both in terms of culture and content) to the average Hollywood movie.

And I didn't really like Night Watch, mainly because the resulting film's tone was so different to what I expected that I was slightly confused by it. However, I really liked Day Watch as I was a bit more prepared for what it would be: not an action packed Matrix rip off, but a bizarre Russian comic sci-fi movie, and a pretty unique and entertaining one at that.

Apparently is absolutley dire... Which is to be expected with that spanner in it.

more recently the red band trailer for "step brothers". Pretty much none of the clips shown in that trailer made it into the final cut. I'm sure they'll be in the outtakes, but it's just odd to release a trailer for a movie with scenes that aren't even in the movie.

What is a red band trailer?

The Golden Compass trailer has the correct ending from the book but they cut the film short of this key point to the story. Very disappointing.

The Superman Returns trailer show a spaceship searching the remains of Krypton - Again, not in the film - A very boring, soppy, overlong film.

You know the Green screen before most trailers saying its suitable for all audiences? Well red band has a red screen saying its restricted. Basically the 18's version of the trailer
