Has anyone else used the new "working" computers in the PC hut? Simply AWESOME! I cant remember the last time there was more than 4 computers working in here!

Although, I think these "new" pcs are actually just old Hamilton computers handed down... bloody scientists always get the fancy hi-tech stuff!

I was in the Hamilton labs last night and found a raft of new Dell something-or-anothers before me. Good times! But half of them were crashed on the "Logging in..." screen. Bad times. Not everything changes.

Just turn them off and back on again.

That requires effort on my part.

    What can't xkcd do?

Seriously though, the new computers in the Hamilton are sweet. If they crash, either e-mail ISS on heldepsk@tcd.ie or Hugh, the Education Officer at education@tcdsu.org.

Ironically, it can be much more effective to e-mail Hugh, especially if it's a number of computers that are crashing or freezing. He can e-mail the Director (Acting) of ISS who just picks up the phone, gets the usage statistics for the week for each and every computer and then sends a team down. There's very regular contact between the top of ISS and the SU so that's the best way to get it sorted. Also, ISS paid for shiny new toys, and get annoyed if they don't work.

As for who has better PCs, it's done on a roll-out scheme and they generally vary who gets them first (one year the PC Lab in the Arts Block had brand new ones before everyone else). They are doing some work on the Hamilton rooms anyway so I suppose it made sense to upgrade them first. At least, that's how it was back in my day *Insert typical nostalgic grumble about 16 mile barefoot walks through fields of thorns*

Hurrah, xkcd. I think I'm going to like this Uni.

[Oh, and I'm going to get an EEE 1000H, it better damn work with the college network..]

No doubt they are still using those old ass disk images on those new pcs.

If you mean the OS and pre-installed programs then yes, they're almost identical - all I've noticed is some machines have been bumped up to Firefox 3. According to the cases they're Vista machines downgraded to XP.

I'd see that as an update :) XP is still better than Vista for the time being, in my own humble opinion

I cant believe they are still using that disc image! There is so crap installed, it is depressing.

Have you ever gone into task manager and looked at the processes running? ituneshelper is running. Why they need itunes running on college pcs is beyond me..

I have no idea why they insist on leaving those stupid ram hogging themes on either, put on the classic win 2k theme and save your bit of ram for an actual application to use.

It shows how much bloatware there is on iss computers when you can log into the comp sci computers (which stores your ENTIRE user profile on the server) faster than you can log into the iss computers (which just have to run one script to map your network drive.)

Shweet. The 1000 has draft.n too, which is good. Probably.

Fcuk all use in tcd. TCDwifi is 802.11B only. Maths has a nice hidden 802.11G network tho :)

Agreed, about time for a professional IT company to take over the trinity network. We really deserve a lot better than this lack of service. These support guys haven't a clue.
