    Guys,

Im coming to the uni this year as a fresher.

Just wondering what the standard of football is like?

I played minor intercounty for a bit, albeit with a weaker county, but fancy giving it a good run this winter with the training.

    Phil

I would assume quite good seeing as though they lob enough money into it to win that sigerson thingy-ma-bob.

    Sounds good.

Im sure I won't make the Sigerson as a fresher, but its something to aim for in the future.

And the €500,000 cheques they get every year from the university.

Be prepared for everyone to say how easy you have it as a football player....

they all seem to forget the 7:30am gym sessions and numerous trainings and nights out missed etc.

I was once captain of the freshers team - since then things have been taken alot more serious with the DCU GAA academy introduced. Nowadays players are brought in on scolorships to play with the freshers... But previously DCU would have had Cullen, Casey, Mortimer etc playing freshers footy

When i was there the freshers team was more of a social group but things have changed. Expect to train once or twice a week and a game on Wednesday afternoons.. (good excuse to miss lectures though :D)

The standard is very good especially when you play the likes of Queens, UCD and UUJ. Freshers football is generally very fast and attacking based..

id say DCU is probably the most GAA orientated college in the country. the place is littered with inter-county players all playing with strong counties. then theres the sports academy, all the facilities are there - swimming pool, gym, pitches etc. its quite competitive and freshers is taken very seriously(unlike other colleges) so it may but a stop to your nocturnal activities:Dor not!!

Well I feel that a college boasting all this GAA - GAA - GAA image should at least give sufficient attention to Hurling,

The Freshers team of 07-08 had the bare 15 for most of its games, and only conjured up 18 for the All Ireland B final in which they didnt even have the same set of jerseys and were made up of 3 seperate kits, which is quite embarrasing in my opinion,

A little bit of a hand wouldnt go astray, after all, the freshers hurlers were the only GAA team to have brought an all ireland to the college this year, despite no chicken curry meals after training, jeeps driving on to the pitch to help off a footballer with a 'sore' leg etc etc

    Makes sense...

Also, is there any program there for beginners, eg. Internation students etc.?

No, its a closed shop to be honest, although there is a 'C' team for freshers with no scholarship players on the panel, yet, even at that, the standard would be very high for a person who isnt from a fotballing background

Considering the jeep is driven by the FOOTBALL manager then there would be little point in doing so, he has nothing to do with the hurling. Also that injury that I suspect you are talking about ended up with him being out for nearly 3 months and was feared to be cruciate damage at first. Less of the bitterness.

Of course they can and if you're good enough, they'll have no problem putting you on one of the teams.

Good :L I'm a decent player no where near county standard but would be a good club player, considering going to DCU very much, plenty of courses at DCU interest me

The football team is looked after amazingly well. That's not to say they don't work hard, just they are given massive support.
