Worst summer ever for playing golf

Bloody hell this weather is wrecking my head.
Havent played a round in over two weeks.
Anytime I get the clubs ready to go it starts to rain or else there are gale force winds trying to blow me over.
Between this summer and last summer it has been a washout.
I think I played more golf in Winter 06/07 than in the last 2 summers .
I remember when I was younger ,in school/college I'd play nearly 3 to 4 times a week in the summer and the weather was always pretty good.
Is it global warming, punishment from God,the Armageddon or just bad luck.
Anyone else agree this has to be the worst summer weather wise for golf ?

and it causing clubs to go into very bad debt as greens fees are well down as result of the weather.

Yep I remember those days, you could play 3-4 days in a row, unlike now where you basically pick a day and pray for the weather to behave itself

Bought a nice puma golf top yesterday with the intention of wearing it on the course today, the rain however had other ideas
So annoying, and i was just starting to play regularly again and the weather stops me in my tracks.

And i dont believe its bad luck, I think its global warming but thats for another days argument!

It has been awful... the nights are coming in now too so getting out after work won't be an option for too much longer. The weather during the winter was better.

I seem to remember more course closures due to rain last year.... also placing in play.
This year is doing it's damnedest to be equally as misreable :(

Played 9 holes last night.... placing on the fairway, full wet gear, umbrella... cold. It would be hard to take in November, let alone mid August.

I bought new clubs recently in Halpenny Golf in Swords and they gave me information on GolfVision - an Indoor Golf Centre in Airside, Swords. Since the weather has been so bad I've still got my fix of playing golf and have now played St. Andrews, Pebble Beach and Pine Rivers all indoors without having to use my umbrella or wet gear!

Rang Navan this morning to see if they were still open, yer man told me they were. So we made the 50k trip for the 8am bookin, paid the green fees and it was looking pretty miserable when the greenkeeper came over and said they were closed that the greens were waterlogged. My head was melted..did everyone else get to play?

I played yesterday morning at 7am so was back in before it rained.

To be honest, it wasn't really worth it. Course was just saturated. Obviously been so much rain that they couldn't get the rough and not all of the fairways. Courses are just getting churned up and it felt like i was playing in February not August. Even though the courses are open there's no fun in it all.

Could do with a week of sun and wind to dry the courses out now. Think i'll stick to the driving range until they do.

just back from a 3 week holiday in the states, was really looking forward to swinging a club today and lo and behold castlecomer (my local) was closed, this weather is apalling!!!

Try Corballis Links in Donabate. I've played there 4 times this last 2 weeks when my own club was closed. They haven't closed the course once during the bad weather!!

drove by bodenstown today and wasn't closed but that doesn't surprise me

My club's captains prize qualifying cancelled this weekend (after I played 7 holes in horizontal rain having started at 7.38 am) - and to add insult to injuriry I just got an email from the club telling me the clubhouse and golf shop have been flooded with 16 inches of water and the course is closed tomorrow for the loss adjustors to inspect

Was supposed to go to Castlecomer on Saturday morning, closed that day too...
Should try Athy, nearly always open its well drained course. One of the best winter courses imo...

Just back from a long weekend in Kerry and played 3 times in 4 days. I recently bought new rain gear (Nike) in the US and got plenty of opportunity to try it out.
Played Dooks twice and like most links courses it was dealing with the weather without much difficulty. Played Killeen course in Killarney and was surprised how well it was dealing with the rain. Greens were cut short and were quick. The fairways were firm and the ball was not picking up mud etc. The water hazards did come outside the stakes by 8 to 10 feet but overall it was pretty good.

I have to say I felt very sorry for anyone with a tourist dependent business in Kerry. They have a pretty short season and this weather has meant lots of people have cancelled or cut short their trip

BTW the remodelled Dooks course is a really very course.

Yes I've played it a few times... played Junior cup there a few years ago and played a practice round and then 2 matches on the one day. I'd recommend it as a fine course, some good holes. Well worth playing if you are nearby.
Also, I'm not sure if they do distance membership (I think they do country membership anyway) but IMO it would be woth considering for Dublin folk who want a handicap and still would be convenient enough to play reasonably often on account of it's location?

I was a member there for a season before joining closer to home. It's a fine course with some really nice holes, and always kept well.

Was always made feel more than welcome and someone to play with was easy to come by.

The new motorway makes it an easy commute from Dublin.

Grange has closed in the middle of the round for the last 2 Saturdays, the fairways and greens are fine but the bunkers are (nearly) all washed out.
A few areas of rough are also pretty soggy.

    Mad as hell here.

What waterproofing do you guys use for your bags?
I have one for my stand bag but its not much use on the cart as it doesnt give any access t the bags innards.

    Depressing and Disgusting.

GreeBo, Not sure what you mean by waterproofing for the bag, my bag is pretty waterprrof on its own and when I play I just keep the hood pulled up around the clubs.

My top tip for waterproof hat is to use an ordinary baseball cap and spray with suede protector / waterproofing (that is used for shoes) before you start your round. It'll last the round (pretty much) and unlike most hats I've worn it doesn't make the head sweaty.

You should be used to the wind and rain by now having lived in Ireland all your lives. I live in the west myself and rain and wind is the norm. It makes you a better player if you can perform and play to your handicap in those kinds of conditions.

It is disheartening as it's Summer and it's meant to be at least dry some of the time but that's life, and that's the Irish climate. Get over it!

It's hard to get over it when the course you usually play, or are a member of has been closed for the last two weekends which I imagine a lot over here in the greater Dublin area have been .

Except for links courses I think any course would struggle with the amount of rain we have had for the last 2 weekends, and the forcast for this weekend... two lots of rain only , all day Sat and all day Sun , lets hope it's wrong.

The courses themselves must be really struggling both financially with the lost green fees , and with drainage.

Just about to embark on the 8ish hour journey home to play golf at home for the 1st time in 5 or 6 weeks. I really hope the weather holds up for a few hours! Not going to hold my breath though!

Playing at 4pm today in a club foursomes match. Forecast is good and I'm really itching to play.

I play on a parkland course in Mayo and it's only been closed once this summer. It is kept extremely well though.

It is disheartening when the course is closed I agree but I was referring to players who cry off and don't turn up on a wet or windy day. ;)
