the water pump circulates coolant around the engine and stops the engine overheating. Its a very important part of the engine...

normally, when the timing belt is being replaced, the water pump is also replaced is it may share the same belt and tensioners and is usually in the same area of the engine....

    what car is it ?

You'd be mad not to change it. The new belt will pit pressure on the old waterpump pulley and possibly break it

The water pump is kind of very essential for the workings of the engine.
It's what keeps the coolant flowing ...if it stops working your engine overheats and cooks itself to a very quick and sudden death.

On some engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt. A water pump as such isn't very expensive ...the labour of changing it and/or the timing belt on the other hand is. So in most cases it is recommended to change the pump with the belt (while you're at it, so to speak) as a preventative measure.

Also a water pump when it goes wrong usually seized solid ...thus damaging the timing belt and killing the engine twice over ...by cooking it and by making the engine eat its own valves due to the broken timing belt.

Don't save money at the wrong end ...get it changed with the belt.

A water pump does exactly what it says it pumps water around the cooling system of the car ie from the engine to the radiator so it can be cooled down.

The reason this is done is because when water heats it builds pressure and if it wasns cooled it would blow all the water out of the cooling system.

Does it have to be changed when the timing belt is changed?

Short answer yes if its run off the timing belt reason being if you put a new belt on and tension it chances are the bearings in the water pump will get noisey and if its not replaced when this happens the bearings will collapse which will result in timing belt failure.
So for the sake of fourty or fifty euro we normally just change them par for the coarse.
If the pump is only run from the fan belt it usually wouldnt be changed with the timing belt because it wouldnt require the timing belt to have to be stripped again.

I wouldn't bother on a Punto to be honest, I've never seen them give trouble on one.

So its just everything else on them that gives trouble?
