Acer extensa 5620z Product Key problem

I helped my friend set up above, broadband, email etc. 2 weeks ago.
As he is 100 miles away I can't see the issue he is having. Apparently pc started asking for product key again, but when he puts it in it says it is incorrect. I found the pc very hard to set up and had to troubleshoot issues, had an issue with this originally, perhaps we did not set it up properly.
His email is also not working, cannot send etc - is this related, software not recognised?

Is it possibly not registered properly. Am at a loss at this stage trying to help him remotely. Any suggestions?

Is it xp or vista?. did you activate it when you installed it?. as for the email who is the isp and what did you set the pop3 and smtp servers to.

The key (pun intended) to sorting this out is detail.

What exactly is asking for the key? I suspect it is Windows, but we need as much detail as possible.

What exactly is happening? i.e. is it after he/she logs in, is it before, is it a specific product, what is the exact message on the screen?

Thanks for replies. What I think now has happened here is that he only had a trial version of Office perhaps, think it may be asking for this product key rather than main one - it's around 60 days since he bought it. Sent him a message via facebook last night but haven't heard back yet.

Most anti-virus trials are for 60 days so it could be that. Office trials give you a certain amount of uses before you have to buy it (I think it's 25 uses) but could also be timed. The windows trial period is only 30 days so it looks like it's not windows.

I he went past 30 days with Vista, the only thing it would let him do is log-in to punch in the product key and connect to microsoft.com to verify. outside of that it would log him out of his machine.
