Is it possible to apply for a new passport before the finish date?

As in my passport expires in 2-3 months and would like to apply now?

Yes. In fact you're supposed to apply before it expires :)

Mine is due to in December of this year, would be feasible to apply now?

AFAIK there is no limit as to how soon you can reapply for a new passport though you may get asked questions if you have more than 6 months of validity left (only guessing though).

I think that if it's up in December then there is no problem in applying today. Just find a time where you're sure you can live without it for 10 days :)

Isn't there some unwritten rule that you should renew a ten-yr passport when there is 1-2 yrs left on it?

Anyways, mine doesn't expire till '10 but want to renew it now as its looking a bit dog-earred.

Nope, otherwise they'd issue them for 8 years ;)

As said above, you can generally do it a few months before the date without an issue

I applied to change my passport when there was four years left on it. No hassle at all.

I know this isnt to do with the above question but I need to get a new passprt as mine is damaged... how long does it take as i plan on going on hols early sep, can i apply for an emergency one??

There's plenty of time. A renewal can be done by passport express at the post office in 10 working days (used it twice, family have used it, friends too, never longer than that).

An emergency passport is generally only provided within a very short time of travel and involves hours of waiting as the passport office.

mine expired in 2013 but 3 weeks ago i applied for a new one and sent the old one away
reason being the edges were slightly curling up and im going to the usa soon - didnt want any issues at immigration, i still have the old one too with the corners cut off and have used the new one in greece since it was issued with no problems at all.. new ones are biometric too which is even better in the eyes of immigration officials...

Just get a form from your local Post Office or Garda station and submit it with your new photos, fee and the old passport. There won't be a problem. Your old passport will be cancelled and sent back to you, so that you can have many years of admiring your 12 yr old bowl hairstyle.

A friend of mine lost a large amount of weight and was practically unrecognisable from the photo on her passport. She renewed hers when there was still a number of years to run on it.

slight OT again, but does anyone know how many pages in the large passport, compared with the standard ?
I've run out of visa pages, just in time - 8 months before expiry.
If the large one is too big I'll just stick to the standard again next time.

    <edit>
just saw on the dfa site, the large pp is 66 pages..
