I recently went searching for golf balls of an afternoon and had a pretty successful day pulled out a load of titleist and callaway balls. Trouble is some of these are almost black and i washed them in warm soapy water last night but no good. I was thinkning that maybe soaking them in domestoes might do the trick anyone have any tips?

I often found a hard rub with a cloth in hot soapy water would do the trick. If that doesn't work try rubbing with Jif. I am not sure what causes this discolouration - its possibly due to iron compounds, chemicals/nutrients etc. in the water.

we were playing in Ballymoney in Wexford bank holiday weekend and one of the streams and sent a few down through out the night. found about 20 balls or so..

We dipped them in Domestoes and they came up trumps..

    I am a poor student.

I hope the domestoes will shift it anyway. I've a fierce selection now I've about 75 balls that are a mixture of Titleist, Nike and Callaway and about another 200 that would be Srixon, Top Flite, Dunlop, Pinnacle etc. If I were to buy these it'd cost me a fortune!

    Some more suggestions here

I'm laughing at the suggestion to use "Peanut or almond nut crushed shells, with the balls in a cement mixer" :D That might actually work well and be less harsh on the balls than Domestos etc.

Cillit Bang - BANG & the dirt is gone!
So they say anyway. Shines up coins so might work with balls.
I usually find you have to scrub balls that have been in water for a while & even then they don't always come up great.
Someone also warned me recently that the ditches where you get those lost balls can be home to lots of RATS, who can give you nasty things like Weils Disease

I thought I had read (presumably distributed by ball manufacturers) that water can permeate the balls and mess with the performance?

In saying that I'm always wondering about the refurbed Pro V's up in the Pro Shop - they look in great nick

I think modern balls with their "high tech" covers and solid cores may be less likely to degrade in water than older wound balls. When I was fishing balls out of water hazards years ago I reckon the two piece surlyn balls (eg Top Flites) survived better than wound surlyn balls (Eg Titleist PTS). Wound balata balls may have been worse still but I rarely found any of them as very few amateurs used them.

Strange to think that in the last 10 or so years the wound ball has become pretty much obsolete after 75+ years dominating golf.

Domestoes should sort any weils disease on the balls. I had one callaway that was really dirty and after being left soak in domestoes it was way better but still dirty brown looking. my course has one of those ball wash things at 2 points in the course and a quick spell in there did it the world of good. anyone know wat they put in that stuff

The refurbs are often covered in apint or varnish, it will affect the spin and trajectory, as well as leaving the paint/varnish on your clubs.

Go for the mint balls on ebay.
