    or a belt.
Start car cold with bonnet open.

    Its the 1.8 vvt-i engine.. 140bhp

I was thinking myself maybe its the fanbelt?
    but im clueless with engines..

It sounds like a squeeky belt. Try spraying each one with wd40 just after cold startup to see which one is the culprit.

    Cool thanks.

Do i need to get the belt replaced asap?

In that case they'll probably all start slipping and squeaking. :D

The way to test a fan belt for tension is to twist it between your fingers. As a rule of thumb it shouldn't twist more than 90-120 degrees

don't do this - all your belts will start slipping if you do

    oh right...

    thanks for that advice...

should i be worried about this?

or if it is the fanbelt will i just get it changed for a few quid??

Belts making noise is quite common, particularly depending on weather. Cold=squeak, warm=fine.
You need to find out which belt is culprit since they have different functions.
Start car with bonnet open, listen to the belts, isolate belt. Check manual what that belt does. Ask here again or a mechanic.

Fan belts are cheap and are not a biggie if they snap, other belts can cause serious issues if they break.

no such thing as a fan belt any more - the only belts that can do without are power steering and aircon - but a lot of cars have one belt doing more than one job - eg opel omega where one belt does everything

If you look to the left hand side of the block you'll see the belt that's running on the alternator. If you spray a bit of WD40 on the inner side of the wheel that the belt is on, as in near the centre of it and the squeaking stops then its that belt that needs replacing. Seems to get loose after every 35,000 - 45,000 miles on Celicas. It's called the fan belt by Toyota mechanics, so don't know what other name you'd like for it, according to VH there's no such thing. Either way it's about €120 to replace. Nothing to worry about, only the squeaking will get progressively worse and more annoying over the next 5,000 miles! The belt itself doesn't actually slip, some of those cogs seem to start squeaking when the tension goes off them.

No offence OP but seeing as you're not very familiar with engines, just be careful poking around the belts etc with the engine running.
Wouldn't like you to lose fingers or a hand

That's what I called it too, but the Toyota mechanic looked at me funny then said "Oh, the fanbelt?"

????????? are you serious????? spray a belt with oil ??? might as well put some on the clutch disc while you are at it .

As soon as the WD40 hits the belt it will stop the squeek. Then you know which belt is the issue. I've never had a belt slip due to WD40. On my old B5.5 PD130 passat one of the belt would start to squeek every month or so when there was nothing actually wrong with it. Quick squirt of WD and it was fine again.
