Accuracy of Cal counter on treadmill

I bought a treadmill afew months back. Feeling fitter and shedding the pounds slowly but Im just wondering about the calorie counter on the machine.

I usually aim to burn 500 calories in a session. This takes me on average about 40 mins of running (1 hour including breathers) I mix up the elevation setting on the machine throughout but i notice that whether im on the flat setting or "level 3 weight loss", the calorie counter only increases the burn speed relative to the speed im doing not the setting of the elevation level. Does this means its an inaccurate method of gauging what i achieve in a session?

if so is there a better method or goal for this?

Is your machine measuring your heart rate constantly?.

    No,

Theres a pulse monitor in the handle bars but no constant monitor. Theres a big difference between the flat and the level 3 setting. Its almost like going downhill on flat, theres much more pressure on me on lvl 3 so it stands to reason the calorie burn would increase.
