It seems like all of my friends are playing poker. They're very good and have been at it for quite a while. I've never played a HAND. Sorry I am a newb coming in here like this, but I wanted to know suggestions for learning the quickest.

Also, how much strategy actually goes into it?

I know NOTHING about poker. I want to learn though!

best advice I can give you, dont bother with poker, it will break you and take all your money and mess up your waistline.

Otherwise, buy books like Harrington on poker or join cardrunner or something similiar.

Theres a book in the 'Dummies' series, 'How to play poker for Dummies' which would be a good starting point.

If you are looking for the "fastest" way to be a good poker player, I'm afraid you are setting yourself up for disappointment. The most import quality of someone wanting to be a winning player is dedication to continual learning. The beauty of poker though is that, if you choose your games well, you can make money while you continue to learn.

As for the way you will learn the fastest, that's pretty much up to you. Some people learn best by reading, some by watching, some by discussing, and some by mimicry. You are fortunate in that today there is material available no matter what your learning style is. Let us know which way appeals to you the most and we will have lots of suggestions.

    Good luck,

It'd be helpful for someone who really really needs the basics - the concept of the game, handrankings, antes/blinds, playing in turn, whats a community card etc.

(The Harringtons books etc may seem really basic to us, but they are pretty useless for someone who doesnt know if a straight beats a flush etc, most poker books assume some knowledge, whereas Dummies assumes none).

Edit. Rigger, give it to him for nowt, you meanie.

    100% fool proof.

Correct me if I'm wrong that 99% of players started like this...

Play with friends in a 10quid home game, get a feel for it and learn from mistakes.

Then when you feel ready play on mon/tue in the jackpot :D
