does it ever bug anyone that all the repairs in the show consist of switching out crystals. ship gets nailed by another ship, switch out the crystals and the engines work again...

fixing stuff in stargate is nothing but a game of friggin peggle

The one thing I never understand abouot sci fi shows is how the shields can fail. It's essentially an energy field. As long as the ship has power it should still work. Although that would make things a little boring.

It's not only the ships, the Stargates themselves use a bunch of crystals for their control systems - remember any episode where they mess with the DHT? Pretty much any Ancient technology is controlled by crystals apparently - but my favorite part is that these crystal-based interfaces always have a USB port handy for McKay or anyone else to plug their DELL laptop into! :D

And nobody blinks an eye at Star Trek, "yes geordi, wave the glowing Tire-Pressure gauge over the thingymadoo and magically the warp core will be fixed"

My favorite line of course being from one of the movies after ejecting the warp core (again) "I would, but we're all out of warp cores."

    Insurrection, IIRC.

Ahhh yeah now I remember, for some reason I thought you were talking about the TOS movie era as it was full of slapstick comedy like that at times.

Insurrection... urgh no wonder I didn't recognise it straight away.. was a terrible trek film. 'Ohhh Riker.... not the joystick again...'.

and not only does it irk me that only the control system gets damaged, but everythign can be fixed in ten minutes if needed.

hell, right this moment, try to replace a laptop harddrive and reinstall windows in ten minutes. can it be done? no. stupid thing would take two minutes just to boot up when working perfectly

and a DHD is supposed to be more advanced than a shed full of supercomputers, let alone fixing a hyperdrive engine after its been shot up.

I replaced the li-polymer battery and HDD of a pmp today and it took me a half hour.

A common occurrence with all things technology in all TV shows. Be it cracking a password or bringing down the Interweb - only takes minutes in a show

Yeah but you're not one of the most intelligent people on the planet like McKay or Carter are you :p

I know they're called "control crystals", but maybe they're just meant to be glorified fuses? Maybe we never actually see the real technology inside, and all the crystals are, are user servicable parts.

well in season 4 or 5 teal'c get trapped inside the gates buffer and they talk about how the crystals are like the gates hard drive. in general they usually seem to be processors or memory.

we never see the characters fixing anything with moving parts

Well in fairness even our computer parts have very little moving parts. Traditional hard drives are slowly being replaced with ssds which have no moving parts. That leaves only optical drives and fans.

not USB, if you look, rodneys laptop has a crystal that inserts into the equipment,

i wonder what dell charged for the crystal:D

Well I suppose McKay and Carter usually work on the systems that control things such as shields and engines, it could be very possible that behind the scenes engineering crews are actually repairing the hardware.

But in the end you have to remember it is only a tv show, it wouldnt exactly be thrilling to watch McKay pain stakingly repair electronics, switching out some crystals and tapping a few times on his tablet is much more entertaining.

They do that quite often in Puddle Jumpers

What is the episode where the prison camp are threatening to kill the team unless McCay fixes the jumper and it takes him ages to get it going
