I think USB is constrained to 0.5 Amps which, from what I gather is not enough to power a hard-drive, so you may be out of luck.

Yep, USB only has 500mA, so it can only power relatively small capacity laptop-style drives. I'm afraid you're going to need to cart a power cable around too.

maximum USB HDD capacity on the market to date is 320GB unless I'm gravely mistaken.

Most unit over 120Gb need a special usb cable that has two connectors to give the drive extra power.

Not really, I've got a 250gb drive that runs fine on one. Same line of product recently came out with 320 and thats the most ive seen so far on USB. when a new one comes out it will be a 500gb model for sure, but currently that kind of space is only available in the MyBooks, which need AC power.

Thanks guys. I saw a 250gb HD like the one Overheal has a few months ago and I just assumed there would be at least 500gb available by now.

Can anyone recommend a reliable mains powered 1TB external HD.

There's some 500Gb 2.5" drives on the market (Samsung), including some ones in external enclosures. Verbatim is one external i've seen, I don't think WD have launched theirs yet.

They're pretty rare and slowly appearing, give it a while and you should pick one up easily enough.

WD has the MyBook, its an AC powered 500GB external enclosure not sure if its 2.5" though.

Just be aware that drive isn't standard size. Its a couple of mm taller than a standard laptop 2.5" drive (12.5mm vs 9.5mm), so you'll need to check that your enclosure/laptop will take it. Some do, most don't.

and that drive will almost likely demand AC power.
