    Hey all,

Just looking for opinions on this pic. My dad is really into all things nautical (is that how you spell that?), and I'm thinking of getting this photo that I took in Cobh a few months back printed and framed for him as a present.

Quesion is, is it even that good? I'm a bit undecided about it myself.

Ok, a few comments - the boat is too central to the image. The image seems to be quite blue to me, rather than B&W.

    Lovely focus and detail though.

I think many people do really appreciate a good photo, framed, as a gift, so you might be on the right idea there.

I like it & I think there's something WWII about the blue hue.
With a good frame, it would be fine.

I think it would be a great gift. I sometimes do that for my family as well. I like the coloring of it though... I think b&w would have been a bit boring.

I agree with Paulw there is way to much blue, having said that it's well worth framing

    Good Pic!!

I really like it. Would look great printed and framed! (May be a little over sharpened around the antennae tho)

Just to show that tastes vary, I actually like that about this picture.

Remember something that looks over sharp on screen will look less so on paper.

    I think he'd love it.

That's so true, and worth remembering.

I like the sharpness! I really do. :o
I'm just worried that the antennae may show white fringes when printed.

Anyway its difficult to judge from the web version.

Great image - and a lovely idea. If this is the kinda thing your dad is into then it would be absolutely swell for him. You could also think about a canvas and then you'd have little to worry about with any part being slightly overly sharp. Only one minor criticism - the background slightly more out of focus would be real nice - it troubled me slightly on first viewing. Being so "in focus" detracts from the main subject of the image and as the background itself isn't overly pretty, it would only improve if the background was slightly blurred. Not sure how your photoshop skills are but you could try a little selective blur to fake it perhaps. Nevertheless, apart from the background (which may only be my taste), it is in my humble opinion well worth going big with.

I love the background, I've been sitting here admiring all the little details... sure, maybe it's stealing attention from the subject, but IMO that isn't such a bad thing given how interesting it is. :)

agree totally. very nice. i would say it would look good as a poster print framed. well done.

I also think that the background is fine. It sets the boat in it's enviroment. It looks like some sort of Tug or a working boat & the background seems industrial.

It's a fine image & has great atmosphere. It's not the sort of image that would do well in competition, but that is not what you want it for.

If you get a good quality print & have it mounted & framed it will make a lovely gift. Even if it wasn't a good image, and I think it is, the fact that you have made it for your father would make it valuable.

    I love it.

But, but, but, this picture was taken in Ireland? You can't love it! :p

it's a privately owned tug, working in Cork Harbour.

    Haulbowline naval base.

funny thing about people saying the image is too blue - the tug's paint scheme (and that of her sister tugs based in the UK) is blue.

    it's a very nice picture. it'll make a lovely present, expecially as it's 'hand-made'.

Thanks for all the comments guys, I think I might go ahead and splash out on a canvas print of it. Anyone got any recommendations on where's best to get this done?

And here's the original, so you can see just how blue this thing is :)

Re: the canvas prints have a read of this thread - Two services come to mind that previous posters have found good - updone.com (which i can vouch for myself) and one of the regular posters here stcstc who you could drop a pm to with your requirements. Both have gotten great reviews all round. Your dad will love it.

PS - prefer your mono treatment on the original too. Good luck with it.

That really depends on your print medium and is not really so true of high res photo priniting as there is no ink being transferred and therefore no natural smoothing, so it would really depend on the media it is going on to, if it is going on to a canvas, sharpen away, but if you are going to get a photoprint done with traditional development then what you seen on screen will be a very close match for sharpness...

With all the detail in that photo & the traditional nature of the image, I would go for a conventional print. I just feel it would suit it better.
