Pyloric Stenosis

If an infant is presented to A&E with forceful vomiting...should a scan for a stenosis of the pylorus be carried out before a diagnosis of something else is given..i.e gastric reflux?

The reason Im asking is that last year we brought our son to a Dublin childrens hospital...we told the pead. his symptoms and he diagnosed straight away GER....handed us some Gaviscon and sent us on our way.

I started to read up on GER and the symptoms just didnt seem right...but I kept coming across this condition of Pyloric Stenosis. I read into a bit more..understood what it was..etc...etc.

Our son was still not improving after a further day on the gaviscon,so we went back, but this time I asked could it be Pyloric stenosis, the pead saying that he would send our son for an U.S...which did indeed confirm P.S

36 hours later at 6 weeks of age our son had his surgery and was back to himself within 12 hours.

Personally, if I ultrasounded every kid in A+E with vomiting I'd have bankrupted the health service by now.

But if you're actually asking was your kid treated appropriately, then we can't facilitate that kind of discussion here. Way too much of a minefiled.

Jeeze...no I never felt our son didnt get the correct level of care initially...please dont misunderstand, but my question is if an infant with synptoms of increasingly forceful vomiting ( to the point of projectile) starting from 3 weeks ( and has lasted for 2 weeks) shows up at A&E, surely an U.S would be prudent before GER is diagnosed.

I dont know..but is there a list of common causes for infantile vomiting that peads rule out before making a diagnoses?

The answer to your question is that there are loads of causes of vomiting in babies.

But this thread is becoming very obviously about your baby and the care he/she received, so i think I'll close it, just to make things safe for us.

    Cheers.
