write convincingly about situations & emotions that you have never experienced? I started a thread about this in AH but no-one will answer sensibly.

seems readers are hungry for emotion
I think one writes with confidance

if the writer hasn't experienced the emotion,
then the reader may also be unfamiliar

First off, you have said: 'situations and emotions' here. I wouldn’t advise anyone to write about emotions they had never experienced, because it's so much less likely you'll be lucky and manage to convey an accurate sense of an emotion that’s unrecognisable to you; but a situation, yes, you can place a character in all sorts of situations you've never personally experienced, as long as they're placed by that situation to deal with emotions you yourself are familiar with. That is how you convey authenticity when detailing a situation you've never encountered; by linking it to an emotion you can accurately describe.

To answer in one word... Empathy.

i agree it is very difficult to attempt to express emotions that you have never felt, however experiences are easier.

you need to truely place yourself into that situation so much so that you can physically see every shade of colour and every gust of wind once you can feel the small details you can then write about the experience

When you're writing about a situation I'd suggest you think small, describe the small details, writing about feelings can be hammy if you haven't much experience of them urself, but if you get the situation right, then the emotional triggers within will be enough to imbue readers with a personal emotional framework for the piece.
