The last few pics are of bound feet. think its a Chinese things more than Japanese.
The third pic reminds me of the way Dexter's ma walks in Dexter's Lab

OP you really should have a disclaimer or warning in your post. As someone mentioned the last few images are of bound feet which is a chinese custom and the images are quite disgusting, you really should make people aware of what they are going to see.

The ballet style shoes arn't new, they've been around a while. Rhianna wears them in the video for Umbrella but they were out a long while before then.

The bound feet thing is just so sad, there are so many older women in China who are suffering today because of it.

    Or check out Gareth Pugh!

    <3ing flat shoes personally, though.

I'll put a "gross" warning on the thread for those of a delicate disposition btw.

Holy crap, that woman's feet. I feel sick... I understand wearing them because you are a Geisha and of the traditions that come with it, but why would someone put them on their feet for fashion. I do not understand some women at all.

Geisha have normal feet, the only tradition with their feet is to wear different types of sandals. Maiko (apprentices) wear okobo, fully trained geisha wear zori or geta. Nothing to do with Chinese foot binding.

TBH in the OP's photos I kinda like the red leather boots :) No freaky foot bending, just really good balancing act needed. :)

The first few pics of the ballet-type shoes with heels are actually bondage-type Fetish Shoes.

People wouldn't normally wear them outside of the bedroom/dungeon...

I live the horse hoof ones :D

When the communist government started to take hold in China, they ordered the foot binding to be ceased and all the currently bound feet to be unbinded. This was actually worse and more painful for the women to do this.

These are the shoes (apprentice) geisha wear http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/4b/Okobo.JPG/200px-Okobo.JPG

    Older geisha wear flatter ones.

More on the practice and history of Foot Binding

It's an interesting topic for sociology. Reminds me of the starvation fad that was so prevalent in the US during the 80's.

A model by the name of "Twiggy" started the extreme thin trend, but she was naturally long and thin.

It's pretty much the concept that if someone who is well known likes something, it must be a good thing... right?

Kind of like baggy, prison styled clothing for the "gangsta' types"

Fashion as a whole is self degredation.

Exactly, they've been around for years, how on earth are they new? And how do they relate to foot-binding...?

    Typical!

In a way, it was a type of slavery, not allowing women to run. They were captives pretty much.
