Wasn't there some other Irish shooter who did well in the World Championships this year but wasn't selected for China?

He only ever had an outside shot at a medal. He finished 7th in Athens

Not an expert on shooting, but Ireland brought every competitor who qualified.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

The top 6 qualified for final round so he missed out on a shot at a medal by one place. With the margins involved in shooting that rates as more than an outside chance. Poor day today but he is definitely capable of making it through tomorrow.

Ireland LM4- finish 4th in their heat. Never recovered from a poor start in strong tailwind conditions. Go into the repechage.

What a performance, 4th in the final. Scraped into the semi in last spot, scraped into the final in last spot and when the chips were down put in the performance of a litefime when it mattered. 4th place in the Olympics. Well done.

Saw Eoin Rheinisch's final run this morning; fantastic performance to get 4th, especially after scraping through the heat and semis! He looked like he stalled in the white halfway down the course, small mistake just for a second, but considering the ~3 second gap between him and third I don't think it would've made a difference.

Furthermore, I doubt he'd begrudge Boukpeti the bronze medal. The chap was delighted and he snapped his paddle in two in jubilation after he crossed the line - he's Togo's first-ever medal at the Olympics! While I was disappointed for Eoin it was great to see and that's what the Olympics is all about.

Andrew Bree just swam another new Irish record of 2:10.16 coming 5th in the semis of the 200m breaststroke. Kitijima won the semi in an Olympic record.

After the second semi, Bree missed out on the final by less than 0.2 of a second. Great performance, and unlucky not to be in the final.

Irish Track athletes in action today for the first time.

Alistair Cragg run well out of in in the men's 1500m. His main event is the 5000m.

Fionnuala Britton had a season's best in her Steeplechase heat, but was eliminated.

Roisin McGettigan finished a very comfortable 2nd in her heat, qualifying for the first women's Steeplechase final.

Rob Heffernan finished in 8th in the 20k Race walk. Was with the leading group for a large part of the race. Won by a Russian (who was a bit controversial after failing a drugs test earlier this year, but there was no ban). Race walking has to be one of the worst athletic events to look at :)

Great result for him, apparently he was in the leading bunch but when the Russian made a break he fell behind a little bit.

I'd say the hips are killing you after a walk like that!

Three Irish boxers through to the quarters - they can't all lose so we're getting a medal soon - about time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭juvenal

Yes, she was well down the field, and her time was a good bit outside her PB of 2.39.05 which she ran earlier this year. She's Ireland's first representative in the women's marathon in 20 years - and while she perhaps could have performed better, with the conditions I thought she ran well, and in her first Olympics.

The winner, Romania's Constantina Tomescu, is 38 years old. Paula Radcliffe struggled after a good start, and stopped with about two miles to go suffering from cramp, before continuing on to finish well back in the field. The 2004 Athens bronze medallist Deena Kastor from the US, dropped out of the race after three miles, which shows you how tough it was.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 272 ✭✭lt_cmdr_worf

Derval O'Rourke failed to qualify from her heat.....

Roisin Mc Gettigan finishing last in the 3000m steeplechase final, but Denis Lynch (equestrian) went around with no jumping faults, taking a total of two time faults into tomorrow's final qualifying round.

Didn't she crack her foot of one of those mile markers that they had positioned in the middle of the racing line?

The barriers on the side of the road caused Liz Yelling to take a tumble when the bunch of runners moved over to the left suddenly, she got taken off to hospital at the end for xrays at the finish. Someone else probably took a tumble on top of the 1km marker that got knocked at the start as it was in the way and the drinks stations early on were dangerous due to being far too close together so had people falling over the top of each other and having to run backwards to get to their drinks. Hopefully they sort those things out before next weekends marathon.

My bad, indeed she did, pulled up clutching her foot which apparently broken. I didn't read anything about it coming from a mile marker, but perhaps it did. I did notice a lot of jostling and pushing in the early miles where as you said, the water stations were very close and resembled feeding time at the zoo sometimes.

QFT - whatever about the other Irish athlete's underperforming in relation to their potential, she was on holidays when she discovered she was in the marathon. Fair play to her.

so by that logic anyone who trys there best should represent ireland.there was a reason she was on her holidays she didnt make the A standard and the oci sent her anyway and at 39 i dont think they where thinking on london 2012

Don't be facetious - she made the Olympic standard, after that it's up to the national Olympic committee to decide whether they use the A or the A and B standards as methods of selection. I wouldn't begrudge her the chance to run at the Olympics like some members here are quick to do.

What if the Romanian Olympic Committee decided not to send Constantina Tomescu to Beijing because she's 38 and wouldn't be around for London 2012?

It's easy to sit at home behind your internet connection and criticise.

David Gillick just came 4th in his 400m heat running 45.83. Not an automatic qualfier.

Do you not notice a slight flaw in your argument here? Tomescu had pedigree, eg World half marathon champion, second (or third??) in the London marathon, etc.

It's even easier to spout banal tosh about them all giving their best. Let's stop sending journey athletes with no potential just so they can have a 'nice' experience - that's precisely the attitude and mindset that has produced yet another sham of an Olympics for Ireland (with a few notable exceptions). Time to redirect the funding towards professionally run (no amateur coaches need apply) development programmes for kids with real potential.

I don't disagree about sending out journeymen athletes to the major events, it's an embarrassment when athletes struggle in heats and can't get into the mix. A lot of sports in this country, athletics being one of the primary ones, need serious investment and an upgrade of facilities to produce successful athletes. When you compare Ireland to Jamaica, a country with half the population, they've always produced far superior athletes and aren't exactly a first-world country with booming economy.

While I agree that the selection process is a bit come-all-ye, it's a bit late now to say Pauline Curley or Derval O'Rourke or David Gillick shouldn't go to the Olympics because they weren't contenders. They're already there, so there's no need for begrudgery. What's wrong with giving them a little credit for getting there, whatever the selection flaws, as it's more than most of us have ever done? Next week we can focus on discussing sports funding, selection processes and development programmes. I doubt any of us would turn down a shot at the Olympics if we were offered it.

Ireland should have been investing big-time in all the Olympics sports for over a decade now with the amount of public money thrown about, and especially even more so since London were awarded 2012. Look at what the Chinese have achieved since they were awarded 2008 (granted they've a slightly larger population ;) )

Jamaica do only take part in three events in track and field though, four if you count the relay. They are probably spending more money on developing athletes in that couple of events though than Ireland is on the whole team across all events.

I don't think it would be good to just specialise in one event like Jamaica though.
