I have to compile a list of Shane Byrne's career highlights but haven't the greatest memory. I know he played in the 2005 Lions tour but am having trouble thinking of other worthy stuff.

    Any mullet experts out there?

This is going to seem mean spirited, but whatever list you'll get will be a short one. He was a fairly limited player who spent most of his career in Wood's shadow and only got a run because Wood was forced into an early (ish) retirement.

If you need highlights, I suggest you focus on his Leinster career, I would suggest the good folk at Leinsterfans.com could help you.

He played in the Irish Team that beat Austrailia in the swimming pool match.
He also won the inaugrial Celtic League with a 14 man Leinster team beating Munster in the final. He has a huge amount of caps for Leinster.

In terms of the six nations his finest hour would have been against Wales in feb 2004, when he managed to score two tries, albeit against a Welsh side who turned up without taking the rudimentary precaution of having any decent forwards......be good footage for any clips compilation I imagine...

Not many people know this but Shane Byrne's mullet has had a preservation order placed on it.

    Honest.

Can you imagine how long that took him?

Shane Byrne was by no means a limited player, in 2004/2005 he was at the top of his powers and is a triple crown winner and former Lion to show for it. His accuracy at the line out was second to none and he was a powerful scrumager and strong in the loose. When he left Leinster they struggled to find a replacement until Jackman found his form last season.

He was also asked to run as a TD candidate in Wicklow by Fianna Fail last time out but rather wisely turned down the offer.

A number of people believe that his hairstyle actually held back his Ireland career by a couple of years.

Who would that be? His wife and mother?
He was under-rated mainly because everyone saw him as joke or character because of the hair, but he definitely benefited from being in the right place at the right time when Woods hung up the boots.

    That was entirely my point.

He was the best Hooker in Ieland at the time of his selection for Ireland, perhaps in all the home nations hence his lions selction, you do him a great disservice to suggest his selection was down to being in "the right place at the right time" He was in the same place he had always been.

It's not just down to that but if he was playing today I'd sa he'd be behind Best and Flannery althought his throwing is better.

afaik Flannery was behind him in the pecking order at the time when Byrne was coming to the end of his career and Flan was coming into his prime. Having said that, Sheehan was probably 2nd choice at the time.

It's difficult to say as they were poles apart in their careers. If Flannery ever gets the No.2 jersey for the lions I'd say he could have been a better player, but I can't see that happening at this stage. (He'd do well to hold onto it for Ireland let alone Lions)

There is no way of knowing really all thought to be sure Best and Flannery are quality players, both are good bets to tour with the lions next summer.
