    2 All In
    3 Sable Decision
    4 Mr HIll
    5 Stoneriggs Wiseman
    6 Bet Your Miffed
    7 Arctastic
    8 Lakeside Dai
    9 Peaks Pretender
    10 Frosty Flyer
    11 Coalford Victory
    12 You Bet

Verdict: Lakeside Dai was an impressive winner two weeks ago but is up in class ever so slightly here. Although Dai had the measure of him the last day, I'm going to go for ALL IN here to gain some revenge. You Bet is a danger despite a bad draw.

Race Two, 1.30pm LIVE ON ATR
    1 Papa Joe
    2 Springhill Kate
    3 Fantastic Western
    4 Evenwood John Henry
    5 Destinys Dream
    6 Southlands Art
    7 Kouros Boy **
    8 Artisan
    9 Ayr Glory
    10 Flashdance
    11 Bon Camotion

Verdict: Porterstown Jack dropped out of this race after a memorable win in Musselburgh during the week. Kouros Boy is expected to be declared a non-runner, which would appear to leave this race at the mercy of BON CAMOTION who had the beating of all of this field the last day. Springhill Kate is a danger with Evenwood John Henry the unknown quantity who could spring a surprise with the benefit of a favourable draw.

Race Three, 1.55pm LIVE ON ATR
    1 Dreamfair Samurai (GB)
    2 Crown Manhattan (GB)
    3 Zidane
    4 He' For Real
    5 Stoneriggs Wizard

    7 Galiano
    8 Western Jackpot (GB)
    9 Earned Income
    10 Swingman
    11 Connors Dragon (GB)
    12 Toms The Man

Verdict: The English superstar CONNORS DRAGON is the one they all have to beat here. This could be the best harness racing field ever assembled in the same race in this coutnry. Galiano will relish the challenge. Crown Manhattan, He's For Real and Toms the Man are big dangers.

    Race Four, 2.40pm
    1 Canewood Legacy
    2 Hardboy Sam
    3 Hilside Hi Ho
    4 Talavary Dream
    5 Willsboro Gold
    6 All Shook Up
    7 Nice Guy Tom
    8 Kansascityshuffle
    9 Nipper Lee
    10 Oakwood Diamond
    11 Querelle Hanover
    12 Tobar Star

Verdict: Those with sense often stay away from the Maidens and that might be the best advice I can give here! My pick for this race, Chesney, was injured during the week and subsequently scratched. I'll therefore hand a tentative vote to KANSASCITYSHUFFLE.

    Race Five, 3.10pm
    1 Sea Wave
    2 Meadowbranch Nadia
    3 Meadowbranch Liath
    4 Sands Cam Ocean
    5 M&M
    6 Baretta Hall
    7 Mr Chapman
    8 Moorside Cheiko
    9 Porterstown Gwenan
    10 Dennis Taner
    11 Design For Life
    12 Jealous Guy

Verdict: Another Maiden and another good time to exercise caution. MR CHAPMAN stands out amongst an average field.

    Race Six, 3.40 TROT
    1 Hispania As
    2 Zorro Launcher
    3 Only Still
    4 Aramis Launcher
    5 Tanja Weillanga
    6 Rubin Launcher
    7 Quarterpast Six

Verdict: After a flawless trotting performance a fortnight ago - there can be only one selection here, QUARTERPAST SIX. The veteran Only Still is as game a trotter as you will find and will be ready to pick up the pieces should the top tip miscue, but this is surely unlikely.

    Race Seven, 4.10pm
    1 Sands Cool Touch
    2 Racing By Design
    3 Sean Thornton
    4 Revolver
    5 Marion Hall
    6 Sky Security
    7 Southwind Pacifica
    8 Armbro Foxy
    9 Calm Louis
    10 Skull Duggery
    11 Robert E Lee
    12 Beach Meadow

Verdict: Revolver broke his maiden two weeks ago, and has ended up lumped in with stablemate Sean Thornton in this one. They've drawn beside each other, will this relatively small stable fall between two stools here? I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and go for the grey, SEAN THORNTON.

    Race Eight, 4.40pm
    1 Lakeside Banker
    2 Iceskater Hanover
    3 See My Reflection
    4 Azar Hanover
    5 Steeplejack
    6 Mr Security
    7 Springhill Horizon
    8 Blackwell Monsoon
    9 Catch the Magic
    10 Matty O
    11 Windsongs Dynamite (GB)
    12 Seeking the Gold

Verdict: I tipped up SEE MY REFLECTION here the last day and I see no need to veer from this course, despite the step up in class. Azar Hanover also impressed the last day and is a worthy contender. The elephant in the room here, for me, is British raider Windsongs Dynamite, who I feel has been treated lightly by the Irish handicappers. Will the bookies and punters catch on??

Race Nine, 5.05pm LIVE ON ATR
    1 Man of Luck
    2 Wellfield Adam
    3 Sabercrombie
    4 Stoneriggs UK
    5 Armbro Dazzler
    6 Baron Design
    7 Banshee
    8 Glenarn Harrier
    9 Ayr Storm
    10 Coalford Ameretto (GB)
    11 Lyons General (GB)
    12 She's What Matters

Verdict: This is a very competitive race, with my nod going to another grey, GLENARN HARRIER. Paced into a place the last day, his West Cork owners broke the bookies to the reported tune of stg£20k during the week when their other charge, the aforementioned Porterstown Jack, won Musselburgh - can they claim another scalp here? Methinks; Yes! Ayr Storm, the two British horses and Man of Luck are big dangers.

Race Ten, 5.35 LIVE ON ATR
    1 Rockaround
    2 Snatch
    3 Damontas Warrior
    4 Porterstown Topaz
    5 I'm For Real
    6 Bad Girl Hall
    7 Wap Bam Boogie
    8 Spiderman
    9 Porterstown Mystic
    10 Financial Matters
    11 Ayr Strike
    12 Ripling Scooter

Verdict: Another well handicapped race with evenly-matched competitors throughout. SPIDERMAN, it seems, is due to go off as a heavily fancied favourite here but although I'm going to tip him as the one to beat, I'm not sure this is the 'penalty-kick' others would have you believe. He failed to fire during the week on a difficult Musselburgh track. Do connections have their eye on the ball here? We'll see.
Incidentally, this race - THE PADDY POWER DIAL-A-BET PACE - can be gambled on ante-post at this link. Porterstown Topaz looks good e/w value:

    Hi, Whip It.

I've ben reading your threads on this over the last few weeks. Don't have ATR but intend to head up to local bookies tomorrow to take a look at this. Don't think I could have a bet in fairness but just curious to see how it pans out. Would you mind answering a few questions?

How can so many horses and sulkeys (that's what the carts are called, isn't it?) fit on the track side by side when Dundalk has a max field of 14/15 for normal horse racing?

What's the difference between trotting and pacing?

I live in Coolock and often see the odd harness out in trainging around here. Do you know anyone around here that's involved in training or riding, etc. Would probably stick a fiver on him for an interest.

Think I'll do a placepot based on your selections.

    Thanks in advance!

Hi Collie - thanks for the interest.

The horses start the race in two lines of six - they could easily fit eight or nine wide across the track, I think it's 60yards wide in places. I didn't know there were only ever 14/15 thoroughbreds in a given race at Dundalk, but I wonder is that an actual restriction or just the amount of entries they receive? It's a fantastic track and space is no issue at all.

The difference between a trotter and a pacer is their natural gait. A trotter (less common breed of race horse nowadays, hence only one trot race out of ten tomorrow) has a "Diagnol gait" - it's right fore and left hind legs work together, as in they move forward and back at the same time. Ditto, obviously, it's left fore and right hind.

A pacer is "side gaited" - it's right fore and hind go forward/back at the same time as does their left fore and hind. Pacers will wear harness around their legs called "hopples" or "hobbles" to help them maintain their gait. Occasionally you will see a pacer who can pace fast without the need for hopples, known as a "free-legged pacer." They are rare, off the top of my head I can only think of a pacer from Cork called Harmony P who paces freelegged but you do com across the odd one.

You're from Coolock you say, well the top trainer and driver in this country for the past few years, John Richardson, is also from Coolock. I've tipped him in the first and eight race above, although I would keep an eye on both of his maidens, Meadowbranch Liath and Meadowbranch Nadia - they're drawn in the same race so he will only drive one of them himself - as they're expected to go well.

John isn't the only harness racing man from that general area, I'm a southsider myself though so I'm not 100% sure who's from where! If you pop your head out your window early tomorrow morning you might see a horse lorry or two with a sulky on the back - if you stick your thumb out I'm sure you could cadge a lift! :D

Also, with regard to the horses you see training on the road, I would hazard a guess that these are not actual race horses. All standardbred horses (harness horses) are fully registered, micro-chipped and cannot race without a passport, flu vaccine etc. Pretty much all horses you see on the road would be "leisure" horses, bought for that purpose alone I would imagine.

The horses racing this weekend would all be conditioned at training facilities around the country.

With regard my tips - I'm not much of a gambler, I just love the racing, so I wouldn't have anything other than a "fun" bet. Although JR is well worth that fiver you mentioned in most races he lines up in.

Hope you enjoy it, let me know what you think and if you've any more questions, feel free...

    UPDATE:

Lads, in RACE THREE - Galiano has been declared a non-runner due to illness. This, for me, makes Connor Dragon even more of a nap. I'd be surprised to see any kind of price for him now however, unfortunately.

YOU BETtook a cracking race here. I think I'll cool my interest in All In after yesterday. Have fancied him twice now and both times could only manage third. I would've rated him slightly ahead of You Bet before yesterday - not any more.

AYR GLORYblitzed the field here and showed talent to match the reputaion he carries. Connections may have turned the corner with this fella and he is certainly one to watch out for.

Unfortunately, Saturday's rainstorms robbed us of the chance to see Connors Dragon up clsoe and personal. However, it's highly debatable whether he would have lived with HE'S FOR REAL, the winner yesterday. A fantastic race and a thrilling finish in the fasted time of any of the 20 races held on the venue in the past fortnight. A superstar performance.

Again, unforunately another scratch here with Kansascityshuffle suffering a minor injury during the week which left him unable to compete. ALL SHOOK UP picked up the pieces to take the win.

I deserve a kick in the a*se for not plugging MEADOWBRANCH LIATH here. Went off as favourite and won it any way she wanted. Consolation - well for me anyway! - I backed her! :D

QUARTERPAST SIX made it two in a row over course and distance and was even more impressive here. Came home all wrapped up to win with ease. Only Still could only manage third after employing the dubious tactic of going to the front from the start.

I backed off this race despite the fact I'm a huge fan of See My Reflection, who went off as favourite. I was right to do so - as suspected, the British horse, WINDSONGS DYNAMITE was more than up for the task and won by three lengths.

Maybe the most impressive performance of the day - PORTERSTOWN TOPAZ made all the running on the front end and when the challenge came two furlongs from home she had more than enough to ease away and win by six lengths. Odds-on favourite - as suspected - did not get the trip on this occasion.

There's an article in today's Racing Post about a Harness Racing series to be held in Wolverhampton during the month of September.

There will be alot of Irish horses going over - it's Invitation only, so the best of the best - so I'll do my best to provide a bit of form and a tip or two from an Irish point of view for anyone looking to have a fun bet or even just keep an eye out for the Irish out of interest.

    Thanks

It is wonderful to see some information about harness racing in Ireland. I will be moving to the Waterford area next month. Any racing meets or farms in that location.

Given that this thread is so old, I'm closing it, but feel free to discuss harness racing on the numerous other threads on that topic. C
