I've had my D40 since about christmas and still only have the kit lens.
i'm looking at the moment to get a new budget lens
would i be best off just going for the nifty fifty as i'm still trying to explore different areas of photography, and i know extension tubes can be used for macro, it is good for gigs etc.

I want to try taking more portrait shots, and was just wondering if it would be suitable for this as i am starting a portfolio course at the end of sept.

So i was really just wondering is my best bet to go for the nifty fifty as my budget is quite restricted. Or is there anything else anybody would recommend for a pretty much beginner.

Go for the 50, it's still pretty cheap, and will give you a chance to play with shallow DOF and being able to shoot in lower light than you have previously!

Even if you buy one second hand, so you'll still have a few bob left over!

thirdfox is the man to talk to, i think he picked up some lovely nikkor mf primes for next to nothing cos the d40 is one of the few cams that can mount them, great for gigs. if i had my way 10.5 2.8 fisheye is all id want for gigs
