Took this snap in portugal a couple a weeks ago...

well 2 snaps really ... I took one at a slow exposure but the boat had been rocking, making it blur ... then I took another from the same spot at a larger aperture to freeze the movement of the boat ... 2 mins in Photoshop and this is the result ..

any thoughts or advice are most welcome as always,

    Philip

    Beautiful shot(s).

If there's one fault, for me maybe lose the bottom 5-10% (up to the rock)? The dark patch in the left and the light patch in the right are a little distracting for me.

I would disagree with this. I think it adds a nice range of colours to the photo.

Yes I really like it too. Don't know if it can be improved;) maybe as above a crop but I love it the way it is! No point in messing with perfection

Great image, the horizon is not perfectly straight.

I might also suggest you slightly blur the very edge of the boat.. its a little to sharp and looks very slightly like a cut out..

    great image..

@jackdaw - Yes, just east of Praia da Oura ...

@Sunny - Thanks for pointing out the horizon ... I tried to get it straight using the straighten tool in ACR but you're right, it's still out by a few degrees ...

I did think the boat looked a bit on the sharp side - I'll try what you suggested and let you know how I get on,

    Phil

Holy moly, that's sweet. How did you do it again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 164 ✭✭pippatee

    Thanks Balfey ...

Weidii - I had the camera on a tripod, composed, and took the first shot at a small aperture (F22) to blur the water, but the ship was rocking so it was blurred too .... then I set a larger aperture (F4), and retook the exact same shot, focusing on, and freezing, the motion of the ship.

I opened both shots in photoshop, copied the one with the ship in focus and pasted it on top of the slow shutter shot as a layer. I then put a black mask on the layer (just hold alt when you click the "Add Mask" button) and used a white brush on the mask to paint the ship back into the scene...

    clear as muck eh?!?

anyway, if you need , I can clarify any of this....
