San Fran can be the strange regarding weather. 20 miles away it can be 30° but as soon as you get into the city it can drop to 18° due to the fog/coast/winds.....

I'm told though that September/October brings the best weather to SF.

There are a load of Google sites that'll give you average weather temps for those cities.

san francisco's weather is totally unpredictable, one time i was there in june 2000 and it was the hottest day in the history of the city 40 degrees and the next day it dropped to like 18 degrees, completely crazy.

you can look back on previous years weather here at weatherunderground, just scroll down to history and almanac on the left hand side and put in the dates from years past http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=san+francisco%2C+ca&searchType=WEATHER

The city of San Francisco has it's own mini weather system and is generally a lot cooler than surrounding areas because of the combined effect of cool winds off the pacific and San Francisco bay. In September the weather is generally sunny, but temp doesn't get much past 20 degrees Celsius. Outside the city, and away from the coast a bit (such as San Jose to the south or Sonoma to the north) and you're talking 3 or 4 degrees more.

Santa Monica will be a lot sunnier, and hotter (past 25 Celsius), although if you are heading for the beach it won't be as hot as that (pacific ocean again).

Disclaimer: The temperatures mentioned are my guestimates/foggy recollections. Check one of the weather web sites before you travel for more accurate forecasts.

    Enjoy the trip.

    Thanks for all your replies!

I am trying to judge what to pack as I went on "a mad one" shopping for all the sun clothes (skirts, shorts, vest tops, bikinis etc) and I dont have any clothes for the colder temp..

Might wait til to get to San Francisco and see what its like. Our hotel is conveniently right beside Macy's so if I need anything I can pop in and get something (and come out a few hours later :p)

It's more likely to be Ireland temps in San Fran than uber hot-Heat is the exception.
Going across to Alcatraz can be downright cold even when the sun is shining!

As everyone said-move 30 miles inland and it's a different world.
We drove last month from San Fran down to LA using the Interstate 5.
Leaving SF it was in the 60's and cloudy.
A half hour down the road and inland it was mid 70's and sunny.
Very soon it was the 90's-less than an hour SW of San Fran.

We stopped at a rest point and the car thermometer said it was 102f outside and it felt it-It was like an oven,we couldn't get into the air con at starbucks quick enough.
Heading back towards LA and it was round the low 80's again.

In summary-Have a jumper and long pants for SF.
    T-shirts and shorts for elsewhere.

If you are near Maceys just up from union square - you'll be in shopping heaven... theres an abercrombie thats much less busy than the New york one and theres an old Navy outlet as well as 100's of others.
I won't go into more details as you'll stumble on them easy enough.

The westfield/Nordstrum centres are just up the road from Old Navy (across from the end of the powell tram line). Check it out. Shoppers heavan

And as for the weather, make sure you have some heavy clothes for the evening in SF. Bin them before SM

This is the simplest and best advice.

We lived in the Bay area for 4 years and in the late 90's I recall one day that there was a 45 degree difference reported on the news between 2 cities that are 45 miles apart (San fran - Sacramento). Fahrenheit of course :)

If shopping is your thing then 3 malls south of San Fran are a shoppers utopia:

Gilroy Outlets. Outdoor Mall... best bargains.

The Great Mall. Indoor Mall, shaped like inside of doughnut, so you start at one point and walk in 1 direction and won't miss anything. Some very good bargains.

Westfield/Valley Fair. Indoor, more upmarket style. Most pleasureable shopping experience.

    http://www.westfield.com/valleyfair/

If you were to attempt all 3 Malls (and they are all within 20 to 30 mins of each other if I recall correctly) then you would need at least 2 days to complete them... and that would be doing it at a pace.

If you are serious about shopping and taking stuff back then the Great Mall has some excellent luggage stores with floppy oversized bags that you could buy for approx $10 to $15 each, to pack get stuff back.

    Enjoy!

STOP with the shopping malls!! DONT be tempting me!! I can feel my arms being twisted as I type this!

We will be in SF for 4 days before heading south and I am hoping that we wont have much time to shop cos once I start there is NO stopping me and then I will have the shopping bug for the rest of the holiday!
