Just went back to using Mail.
    Had been using Entourage.
Problem is when I go to send a mail(even just a test one-no content),it takes on average 30-40 seconds.
With Entourage it was fairly zippy.

Happening with both my iMac and MBP,both running 10.5.4

    Any one else getting this?

    Hi Zen,

good to talk to you again.

I'm on Eircom BB and O2 mail (POP3.o2.ie).
Tried both smtp.eircom.net and the new mail1.eircom.net.(port 25,SSL unchecked).

Both as slow as each other..!!

    Howdy bud !!! WDC ?

I suppose the obvious thing to do is create a new user on OS X and set up mail.app with your eircom/o2 accounts. If that's successful then we can go from there I suppose. Have you uninstalled Entourage or simply moved to Mail with the the former still installed ?

Personally I avoid anything Microsoft like the plague !! But it's hard to avoid Office though :(

    ZEN

    Hey all,

    still having this problem.
    Tried all that Zen,no go.

I installed Thunderbird and no problems at all, mail just rockets out.

But,I'd rather be using Apple Mail.

So,in short, the problem just occurs with Mail and not with the others(entourage,thunderbird..etc)

Just doing a bit of reading and have come across some ideas for speeding up Mail by stripping all the bloat out of its Envelope index, an SQLite database Mail uses to store senders, recipients, subjects etc
    1. Quit Mail.

    2. Open Terminal.

    3. Type the following:

    cd ~/Library/Mail
    sqlite3 Envelope\ Index

    An sqlite> prompt will appear.

At that prompt, type vacuum subjects;.

After a short delay, the prompt will return. Type Control-D to exit.

    4. Restart Mail and enjoy the extra speed.

If you are just having trouble with the speed of sending mails rather than the application itself, try this tip that I came across:
Basically, add the IP address of your DNS (your ISP's name server) manually to your network preferences. It seems unnecessary but it worked like magic. SMTP sending now takes just a few seconds.

    For those who don't know,
System Preferences -> Network -> Airport (or Ethernet if you're using a cable) -> Advanced... -> DNS

Give those a go and see how it goes.
