    Hi,

My husband and bought a farmhouse that we are doing up, it came with three and a half acres which we have allowed our neighbour to cut for the last three years, this year however it is full of weeds they are tall about 4 - 5 feet high and are have leaves and are brown/green in colour, do we have to reseed our field? Our neighbour is too busy to do this does anyone know anyone in kerry who can do it for us we are near knocknagoshel.

    thanks a mill

    Mary

    Sounds like docks.http://www.dgsgardening.btinternet.co.uk/dock.htm
Is that them? The big ones would be brown at this time of year.
If you graze the ground, you could spray it with Doxstar of Bandock etc. Alternatively you could cut the docks individually with a strimmer with a blade attachment or with a sythe. Gather up the docks to stop more seed entering the ground. When the docks start to grow back (and they will) spray them individually with a knapsack sprayer. It's labour intensive but cheap. Next year spray them again in spring and maybe again this time next year. It's takes a couple of years to get rid of them. That'll give you a few years relatively dock free, but when they're in the seed bed, they'll always return at some stage:(.

what about spraying, ploughing, harrowing and reseeding? A local contractor might not charge too much and you would have a great bit of land the following year. It would be easier to keep the buggers in check as you could spot week kill them if they came back.

Don't allow any slurry to be put out though as it seems to drive them mad altogether!
