I just got a whippet x hound and i just wondered what age would you start training them on the lamp.
He is only about 3 months old at the moment so i might have a long wait till i see some action.

i would definitly start his work on returning to you and retreiving to you in daylight. i wouldnt even think of taking him out on the lamp until he has some manners. there's nothing as bad as i dog with no manners running around a field at night and you cant even let a roar at him to come back or you'l scare everything within a mile.

you can start training him now. retrieving a dummy etc... when he's bringing the dummy back to hand and is a little older start taking him to a field at night(not one with rabbits in it) and throw the dummy let him see it landing with the lamp. this will help him put the lamp, the game and the retrieve all to gether in his brain. as for actually giving him a slip on a rabbit, i'd wait til he's 11 or 12 months at least. also dont over do the retrieving or lamp training, he'll get bored.
when you do start lamping him, a slip or two will do. never ever give him too much or you'll spoil him. better to go home minus a few bunnies but with a still keen dog then a couple of extra bunnies and a spoiled tired dog. dont be tempted with one last slip.
