Licence and insurance query

Just looking at the sticky on FAQ, it dates back to 2002 - can we get this updated?

I'm doing a theory test to enable me to apply for a 125cc moped. Just wondering how long does the provisional licence last for? Does a practical test have to be done eventually, and will passing this test reduce the insurance premium signigicantly?

I have been told that Aon and Quinn Direct are the only people who do moped insurance - is this correct?

It's a standard provisional. First lasts for two years, second lasts for two years, subsequent ones last for a year, providing that you can show you've done a test.

Passing the test makes a fairly big difference to the premium.

It's now called a learner's permit, and requires the rider to wear a yellow tabard with 'L' plates on it.

Any idea where to get one of these learner's permits?

The form should be available from the local Garda station/motor tax office, it's essentially a provisional license form.

You might need to do a theory test too.

I recently gone through this Licencing rigmarole.

Firstly apply for your Theory test see http://www.dtts.ie/. On passing this straight forward theory test the certificate you receive will allow you to apply for your provisional A or A1 Licence. Apply for an "A" licence as you will be allowed to ride a 125cc or an engine restricted bike provided you are over 18. This Provisional Licence is for two years in which time you must apply for your test. However you cannot sit the test in the first six months of you receiving your first provisional. This really means apply for the test as soon as you get your provisional because the waiting list is 6 months anyway in most centres.

On passing your test you can then apply for a full (restricted) licence which you must hold for 2 years before you can buy any size bike.

    Get lessons and proper gear.
