I used the Pwnage tool to go from 1.1.4 (which I had gotten to using iLiberty+ and all kinds of other tools for my previous upgrades) to 2.0 and it worked fine. It really is point-and-click and I can't see how you'd go wrong with it - it'll do all the hacking on the firmware file before you even need to connect the phone. Once it has created your custom firmware successfully, you simply connect the phone to iTunes, SHIFT-restore and select the custom firmware file and wait... Worked first time on a couple of phones I've done so far.

However, Apple released FW 2.0.1 for the iPhone yesterday and the Pwnage tool does not yet support this version. The new Pwnage tool is meant to be out today, so wait for that, maybe give it a couple of days to see what other people are saying and then upgrade using that. I'm going to do this anyway to go to 2.0.1 from 2.0 that I'm on at the moment and I'll report back - 2.0 has some serious keyboard lag by the way, typing an SMS is simply painful...

Can't link to the Pwnage tool right now cause I'm at work - do a google search for "iPhone Dev Team" and you should find it.

    Thanks for the feedback.

That site is the one i was actually reading. It had something like 200 comments and many people had different problems hence my aprehension!

There'll always be people with problems I guess - still, Pwnage is pretty good at this stage and as I said, I've used it on a couple of phones with no problems. A friend of mine also used it on a 16GB with no issues. As I mentioned, you might as well wait for 2.0.1 to be sorted with the new edition of Pwnage - even if something goes wrong, you can almost always do a full restore and try again. Since Pwnage hacks the firmware on your Mac, you can always try it out without doing anything on the phone. If the custom firmware fails to build, then you should not in any circumstance try to load it on the phone - but if it works fine, then it should be a fairly painless process - just make sure you don't use the "normal" 2.0 FW when iTunes goes to update the phone.

I'll post back when I get around to updating to 2.0.1 as well. In all fairness, I don't think 2.0 is worth it - the SMS lag is really annoying and the app store appeal has kinda worn off already...

Are you getting full-time SMS lag? Iv'e had times where the keyboard is slow to respond, about every 2/3 days but a reboot cures it. I'd echo the sentiment of not upgrading to 2.0 unless you have to, I did becuase I need exchange/activesync support, not just IMAP.

Then again, if you move to 2.0 and hate it, its handy enough to move back to 1.x

Yeah, I've tried a couple of reboots to no avail. I originally thought the keyboard was lagging everywhere but it actually is only within the SMS app - Safari, Notes, everything else are fine. I've read though that 2.0.1 will cure all that so shouldn't be long now...

Thanks for the info. One quick question, do i need to update my iphone to 2.0 before running pwnage?

No. You download the 2.0 firmware, use Pwnage to create a custom variation of it and if that's successful, you SHIFT-restore the iPhone in iTunes using the custom firmware that Pwnage built. Just make sure you're not trying to hack the 2.0.1 firmware instead - I haven't heard anything about that Pwnage update yet...

Thanks again. I will hold off until the update is ready. :)

I hope it gets here soon... 2.0 is the glitchiest update so far (I've had my phone since the days of 1.0.1 and went through 1.0.1 => 1.1.1 => 1.1.2 => 1.1.4 => 2.0) so I'm looking forward to 2.0.1. In case you're wondering, I've screwed my phone up more than once, but it was always possible to get it back working :D.

Ok Faceman, Pwnage 2.0.2 is out and I just updated to FW 2.0.1 - no problems though SMS app still seems laggy to me, but not as bad as with 2.0. Though things may differ a bit for you, I'd suggest you do the following after you have downloaded the Pwnage tool:

    1. Open iTunes and install any updates available. Do a backup on your phone so you can restore all your settings/sync your contacts, etc. I was on the latest 7.7.1 - connect the phone, start the 2.0.1 download and disconnect the phone while the file downloads. When it's done, quit iTunes completely.
    2. Open Pwnage, follow the instructions and download the bootloader files if you have too. Let it build the custom firmware - this could take 5 minutes or more. If it successfully builds the FW, you're good to go.
    3. Put the iPhone in recovery mode (connect it to the Mac, hold down both home and lock buttons for 20-30 seconds until the phone goes into Recovery Mode). Open iTunes, it will inform you that the phone is in Recovery Mode - if not, try again - you should not do this in normal mode.
    4. Hold down alt/option (I said shift before, that was for Windows) and click "Restore" - select the custom firmware that Pwnage created on your Desktop and go for it.
    5. After this stage, everything is automated - wait for the process to complete. It'll take awhile (5 - 10 minutes) and the phone will reboot a few times. When done, it will show up as normal in iTunes and you can then restore from your previous backup.

And that's it really, assuming everything goes smoothly.

Edit: Did another full reboot after the restore and the SMS lag now does seem completely gone - cool! Installer.app is also back, though empty at the moment until Community Sources get updated.
