"R" ratings might help comedies

Umm, I dunno personally. I dont go watch comedies based on their ratings. Some of the finest comedies I've seen aren't R rated like. I mean I like the adult humour but it's never a requirement to me enjoying a comedy.

R = 16a over here isnt it? Do we have 16a or is it 15a? Shows how much I pay attention to ratings.

I think R is more equivalent to what would be a 17A. Anyone under 17 needs to be accompanied by an adult. So movies that are '18' here would nearly always be 'R' in the States, meaning a parent could bring four year old Shawn and two-year old Leona to the latest gore-splatter fest...

Their closest equivalent to our 18 is 'NC-17' yet it's seen as a death blow to any movie. A movie is more likely to get it for sexual content than violence (e.g. "The Dreamers").

The rating system is such a ****ing mess. It's totally set up as a money making rackett. They release a movie cut to sh!t so that they can market it as 15's or now 16a (stupid ****ing rating). Then its released uncut/too hot for cinema (18 cert) on DVD.

    Really really pisses me off.

It used to annoy me ....

But generally the films that do this are fairly trashy American Pie/ Hostel type movies. Not really movies an extra bit of bush/blood is going to improve anyway.

as much as i hate them there will always be "dick and fart" joke humour. Its the lowest common demoninator of humour. I despise films like Dumb and Dumber as a result and just dont find them funny.

I agree that many of the best comedies are PG or General rated. The Marx brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Spinal Tap, Some like it Hot.

That being said I enjoy Kevin Smith movies too. Then again his dick and fart jokes are bit cleverer!! :o

The rating of a film doesn't make it funny, it's the writing.

Take Dumb And Dumber, (I know Faceman despises it) it's considered a classic. It's the same sub genre as all those American Pie sequels and Dude Where's My Car/Road Trip esque movies. Why is it held in much higher regard than them? Simple, its the quality of the writing (and to a lesser degree the performers on show) not the amount of poo and boobs that can be crammed in.

I think Superbad falls into this category.Personally I found it painfully unfunny with the humour been based around how many swear words they could fit in.

Very reminiscent of Brendan O'Carroll or Roy Chubby Brown.2 of the most worthless "comedians" Ive ever had the misfortune to see.14 year old boys find this type of stuff funny.
