So I go to click the Red X to quit iTunes but it doesnt work. iTunes freezes and EVERY time I have to press ctrl+alt+del and end it as a process.

Why doesnt it just end when I click the X/right click and click close? Why is it that I always have to end it the hard way.

This has happened ever since I got my new iPod, the 80gb classic.
How do I get itunes to stop freezing on me like this? is it a RAM thing?:(

Are you running this in windows or off an Apple (y'know the computers not the fruit...ugh coming up to 3pm slump!)?

All I can do is point you towards Google I'm afraid. Sorry.

Is iTunes sharing the library with anything. Are scripts being used by another application to access iTunes, for example any kind of lcd display that shows what's playing, a G15 keyboard with a display.... and so on. Otherwise download the latest standalone iTunes installer, run it and choose the repair option if you already have the latest version installed.

Edit: What "red" X are you talking about?

I'm guessing the OP is using a Mac... the "close window" icon in Mac OS X is a red ball that contains an "x" when you mouse over it...

Thing is... on Mac OS X, the close window icon doesn't actually close the program in question, it just hides its' window (you can see from the dock that the program is running) and you need to either quit using the menu options or right clicking the dock icon and quitting from there. I imagine then that the OP means that the window just stays open - is the iPod connected when this happens?

I understand where your coming from, I have no lcd display/keyboard display although my library could be sharing...hmm

But if I completely wipe out my itunes and then Reinstall it, will all my songs come back/ be found??

you tried a total re-install? of itunes?

it's doubtful it's a RAM thing, itunes is notoriously buggy on platforms other than mac.

Yeah sorry, I don't use Windows a lot and forgot the close icon is red there too... :)

Like I asked though, is your iPod connected when it happens? I'm just wondering why the problem started when you got the new iPod - how sure are you of this? If it happens with the iPod connected, there could be files corrupted on it or iTunes is trying to sync something across to no avail, which could cause iTunes to freeze when exiting...

If the iPod is not connected when it happens though, it could be other things already mentioned. If you end up reinstalling iTunes, backup your library xml and itl files first (they should be in My Music -> iTunes or something like that - not 100% sure with XP...). Then, when you reinstall iTunes, click once on the iTunes icon, hold down SHIFT and press ENTER to start it back up. It will ask you to choose a library - point it to the itl file and that should restore your music library as is.

    That's a good tip.

I forgot what vanilla XP looks like too! :D Red X in the corner... of course there is :)

Anyhow, if you re-run the setup without doing an uninstall, it will offer a repair option. I'd do that first as it offers the least hassle and see if it helps. If it doesn't offer a "repair" option, then something went wrong with the original install and it has been registered in Windows properly.
