One-off photo edit needed...

I got a great shot of some canoes moored in Manly (Sydney) last Christmas. Colours are spectacular and, as luck would have it, I had the polarizer on my Canon 400D so no sheen on the water. I'm keen to enlarge the image...however...the canoes were tethered my a cable which cuts right across the image and spoils things somewhat.

    So...

Can anyone recommend somewhere in Cork that might edit this out for me (at a reasonable price!)?

Just in case anyone suggests...I don't have Photoshop...otherwise I would do it myself.

    Thanks!

You could make it our photo editing challenge and see what we come up with? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭jwb1

Looking at the image again, it's actually a set of overhanging ropes that needs to be edited out vs. the tether cable. The image could also do with a bit of clipping....

The only problem is the size of the jpg...it's about 3.4Mb which exceeds the max limit on boards.ie....any advice?

If you want, make a thumbnail, stick that up here so people can see it. Then e-mail me the full size jpg and I can host it for you. You can then stick a link in your post for anyone who wants it to download the full version. How does that sound?

    The thumbnail....should be attached......

So I can mail the photo.....thanks...JB

If you like I'll give this a go for you free of charge.

All I'd ask is that I could use it as an example of some retouching work with full credit for the shots going to you naturally.

If you're not happy I wouldn't use the shots as an example.

No problem....feel free to use the shot for whatever purpose you need....

I'll need an e-mail addr to send it to you....

jwb's high quality jpeg can be found here : http://www.4o3.net/boards/photo.zip for anyone that wants to take a stab at it. It's ~3.5 mb

    Great :-)

Would love to get feedback on the results and a comparision from any other edits of it too and see what jwb1 thinks of all the results submitted.

I need all the practice I can get at this sort of stuff and its great to have fodder to practice on.

I'm going to give it a go too, but purely from a novice perspective - I'm only learning, so it's nice to have things that aren't mine to practise on :)

Would you mind if we compared results afterwards?

It'd be good to see and compare.

No problem, but I'm really not a good yardstick to measure against :)

....just wondering what timeline y'all might be operating to to try out editing that image? No mad rush or anything, just wondering....

    Thanks - JB

I've done the "easy" bits, but got distracted by the zoo yesterday. I have visitors coming today, and tomorrow and Tuesday are a bit mad. All going well I'll have a go at the difficult (for me!) bits on Weds. I reckon I'll definitely be finished by Friday/Saturday next if not before.

Looking forward to seeing it....take your time....there's no rush.....JB

    here's my attempt:
    canoescopyod2.th.jpg
I copied sections of the other canoes onto the obscured bit and blended them in as best I could.

I didn't remove the cable at the back, but that should be much easier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,542 ✭✭✭Tactical

Really sorry for the delay but I've managed to be really akward and fall down a flight of stairs.

Not too badly damaged but my back is killing me and is gonna bruise nicely I'm told  Kinda hurts to sit at the moment so will be a little longer in posting the edit.

I'm currently about half way through it.

You mentioned cropping the image, what had you in mind?

..well, first of all, thanks for all the efforts.....

...cropping.....that bit of green canoe on the left maybe...not easy to crop though....

...in any case, you've gone to enough trouble already so don't worry about it....

    Thanks!

I'm back again, still a good bit damaged but on the mend.:)

    Anyways,

I've completed an edit on that pic for you and removed the very left hand canoe for you. Is this the type of thing you are looking for?

    IMG_0184edit.jpg

I also notice that the water is very clear and a little bit of extra work can bring out the sandy bottom nicely if you wish. I haven't done it on this edit and if you like I can do this to let you see the difference.

    Sorry for the delay.

Glad to hear back is on the mend....always a nasty place to get injured....

The image edit looks great....if you have the time, go ahead and do a version with the sand highlighted....you're right, the water is incredibly clear....

    Thanks again.....very much obliged....JB

...had the missus look at both....we're 50:50 on which one makes the most impact....what do you think yourself?

In any case, it looks like your work is done....I am very grateful....as I said before, feel free to use the image for whatever purpose you desire....I'm simply going to get it enlarged....mount it, frame it and hang it somewhere in the house....

    All the best - JB

....I assume I need hi-res copies of the images so that the enlarging holds together.....can you e-mail those to me or is there somewhere I download them from?

    Thanks - JB

    I give up - can't match those!

    Thank you for the comments.

Won't be using the images in any other way than at most as an example of what can be achieved editing. If I did wish to use them in any other way what so ever I'd contact you for your permission first. I feel this is only fair as they are your images.

That aside, I can't decide which I like best either, once you're happy with what you see that's the main thing.

If you right click on the images and select properties, you'll see the url of where they are located and you should be able to download them from there. Any problems give me a shout and I'll email them to you no bother.

What size are you gonna print them at?

Hi again....well, the reason I asked was when I downloaded the images, they were about 750K whereas the original jpeg was about 3.3Mb. So - and maybe I'm way off here - I'm assuming the 750K ones have not got the resolution of the original?

I normally enlarge to 8x12 but I might go further with this one if it's up to it...might go for a canvas print then mount it onto hardboard....thoughts?

    JB

    Ahh, I see.

That's not gonna be a prob.

The edited version is a bit larger than that as far as I remember, the one with the sand detail brough out is around 5.5Mb approx.

PM me an email address and I'll send both edits in seperate email to you and you shouldn't have a problem:)
