Adding software to a new laptop

    If software of unknown origin is put onto a new laptop, will this void any warranty?

    If you get a ton of viruses/spyware you will probably have to remove the virues/format the drive yourself or pay someone to do it, if its legitamate applications, then no, your entitled to do that :)

    warranties cover hardware generally, not software.

    If you dont know the origin of the software though, it could very easily be malware and seriously harm your computer performance. eg. a piece of software called Anti-Spyware, on its own, would be suspect. However if it were branded properly, eg. Norton Anti-Spyware, Avast Anti-Spyware, then you'd at least know what company to look for. In this case, either norton or avast authored the software.
